Power steering fan...when is it supposed to turn on?

Can someone please tell me with the electric fan for the power steering motor is supposed to turn on? Is it based off of power steering fluid temperature.....or is it always supposed to be running? I just want to make sure mine is operating properly.....but I never seem to see it running.

Thanks

Those w/ the 02-03 2-plug rad fan would have their PS Fans on withe the high speed rad fan. While those w/ the revised single plug rad fan would have it on w/ the low-speed.

turn on your car and put the air on full blast and check if the fan is running

Depending on what year your Gen 1 is and if the PS Fan is wired to the High circuit or the Low circuit, it turns on when the engine reaches a set temperature to activate your Engine cooling fan.

The EHPS pump has its own controller electronics that can talk to the ECM for the purpose of OBD diagnostics. once the EHPS pump reaches a set temp, it reduces to 80% to prevent overheating, if this is insufficient, at the pump will shut down to prevent further damage to its electronic control circuits.

The EHPS pump is independent to the PS pump cooling fan.

My power steering started failing last week, and was in an out like a yo-yo. Luckily mine '05 was within the build times for the extended warranty and I took it in to Mini. They said the fan was shot and had caused the power steering to overheat and fail. They replaced both items under the warranty. If you're having any issues with either and are covered, take it in asap. The warranty is 13yr, 150k-mile and covers up to Feb '05 build dates.

Check you fluid level....
Many cars have weeping lines...so the fluid goes low...can give a similar feeling...and only add the RIGHT type of fluid... Mini does NOT use common PS or atf fluid, but a type of Petrosin branded hydraulic fluid....

As in, I'd have power steering for a while, then it would stop working. Then I'd leave the car and it'd come back. It's a massive workout to get it to turn. I think it might have been a bit night on full lock. I'm just glad it's fixed. Pretty dangerous cornering when its intermittent.

About the warranty extension on this.

Every now and then, after I turn of the engine, something is still running under the hood. I start it back up for a second, then turn it off and it all stops, usually with one try. Could it be the power steering fan?

And the power steering fluid leaks. Is this one of the things they'll fix under this warranty?

I've never lost power steering, though.

Leaking PS hose is NOT covered....
The actual PS pump is covered... And only for EARLY 2005 MODEL YEAR CARS...till Feb production I think....
If the PS pump keeps running, yes...it is an issue and covered IF you are in the recall DATE range....

Fan

Was changing the oil the other day and noticed my PS fan wouldn't turn. Ordered one from pelican parts and installed tonight, works like a charm now.

The thing running after you turn the engine off is the main fan, I believe. I'm not sure if it's the high speed or the low speed fan. Also I think it's different to the power steering fan, but could be wrong.

Not sure if leaks are covered per se, but wouldn't hurt to call you nearest dealership and ask. At some point it might leak enough for you to lose the power steering and that's when things get really interesting.

The extended warranty covers all models produced up to Feb 2005. They can check with the last few digits of your VIN.
