R50/53 Which oil drain plug?
Which oil drain plug?
Alot of you said to get a Fumoto, but I can't see myself spending that kind of money when I didn't do it for my Turbo AWD Mitsubishis and Subarus where everyone said the same thing and things have been just fine for many years.
Can't I just get an Ebay magnetic drain plug for a few bucks and be alright? Seems wasteful to spend money on something that I wouldn't spend on for my other comparable vehicles that have been fine forever. I don't care about messy oil changes.
Thanks.

I once felt the same way about the Fumoto, but after reading of all the problems that members have had with regular drain plugs, I'm going to fit one. After all, it is a "fit and forget" item. A Fumoto costs about the same as 3 OE drain plugs, which are a recommended one use item. As for the "e-bay" drain plugs, the ones that I have seen are of a softer grade, i.e. cheaper, type of steel and more prone to rounding off the corners.
I am going with the F106N, with plastic lock tab, and rubber protective cap.

I have had fumoto on my trucks for about 15yrs. Yeah it is more expensive than a one to one comparison, but for those many years I have not have to worry about seals, stripping, over torquing, blah-blah-blah. Next time I change the oil on the R53, it is getting a Fumoto.
That being said, if you don't want to go with the Fumoto, just go stock.

the price is fine if it works my only concern is how much is going to stick out can that be a problem my car is factory low and the engine drain plug is in the middle do not want to hit a bump and break it loose.
what do you guys think?

because of the way the 'hole' is oriented on a GEN1, no part of any Fumoto I've used (installed a few for folks as well as my own) protrudes below the bottom of the pan. The hole causes the valve to point straight BACK and is IMO quite well protected.
Not so on a GEN2 however .... I'd never install F on a GEN2 where it would point straight down from the bottom of the pan . . .

Looking at ECS website, that is what I saw, so no to worry it protruding down low.

Went with Mishimoto. Good compromise between quality, price, and speed. I run these on my Subies. The thing is, this is not a Subie. Will put nickle anti-sieze and will report back over time if it goes south.
Thanks.
Thanks.
