Oil leaking from oil drain plug

Hey, I have an 05 MCS, and I noticed oil was dripping from my car, I thought it was time for a gasket replacement, but after getting under the car to do a recent oil change, it seems like it is coming from the drain bolt. When I tried to tighten the bolt back up, it feels like it is bucking out once it is near fully threaded. It has to be spinning on the last thread. There is a point, where it tightens up, then loosens a bit, then I can bring it back around to the tight spot, all of it is above hand tight, not enough though. I don't know what could have happened. I did use a plastic crush washer, and before that I skipped swapping the metal one on the last two changes, could that be the issue?

sounds like thread wear or stripped threads. Although you have to drain the oil to do this, can you take a picture of both the drain plug and the oil pan with the drain plug out? Just capture the oil in a reuseable pan or container.

Yea, good thing it's the weekend and the weather should be decent. I'm fearing stripped threads, as I replaced the drain bolt with a magnetic one, so the old bolt shouldn't be an issue (still have it). Will probably have the pictures up by tomorrow afternoon.

Sounds like threads are stripped.

If it is stripped you can wrap it with Teflon tape, put a little more than normal and tighten carefully. Buy you a little time till you figure out what to do.

The plug was made to be a ONE TIME use item...most use it a couple times...
First...try a new OEM pug..it has the rubber washer built in....
If the pans threads are stripped mildly...Teflon tape might help...if this is the case, I would install a "fumoto" drain valve...install it once and it is done....
Might need to tap new threads or use a thread replacement product...pan a new pan...if you make the old one work in some way...I would use the drain valve, aka a fumoto...

On top of what ZippyNH said "The plug was made to be a ONE TIME use item ...", you should also use a torque wrench when install the drain plug. I've always done that and have not had a leak, no stripped threads and the drain plug is always easy to remove.

I remember the first oil change I did after the dealers "free" oil change. Man was that drain plug hard to get off. I guarantee it was not torqued to spec!

My car came with the OEM oil temp gauge, which comes with a temp sensor integrated into the drain plug. After a dealer oil change, I noticed it dripping. Turns out they stripped the pan - the temp drain plug only has three or so threads on it. I just replaced it with a generic plug with a lot more threads - no problem. Miss my oil temp gauge, though.
