Why go to all the work and hassle of doing just the guides? The chain wears out the same as the guides. Get a shop manual and it will show how to do it. Watch a pile of YouTube videos as I did before doing my n14.

On an R53 they are pretty easy.
Remove the timing chain tensioner
Support engine, remove pass engine mount bracket
Remove valve cover
remove plugs for guide bolts
lock cam remove cam sprocket
remove guides
do reverse to reassemble.

You can also check out ModMini on YouTube for repair videos. I'm currently using his videos to swap clutches and he's very thorough, not to mention helpful.

This guy's YouTube channel is essentially solely responsible for allowing me to work on this MCS. Just having the full process recorded has been hugely helpful, as these cars are a fair bit more complicated than VWs tend to be (due to the requirement of compactness).

My chain is not making any noise .I thought it would be a lot easier to just keep most everything together and put a little tension on the chain to keep it from coming off the bottom sprocket and slip the guides in from the top. If that is not possible ilI' wait till I get some noise. Thanks for the response. A Curtis
