Problem Changing Oil Filter on 2002

Well, after getting the right oil, tools and oil filter I started the change. I installed a Fumoto valve for easier changes(and less chance of a screwed-up drain plug)in the future. Then I unscrewed the filter housing and pulled out the filter, grabbed the new filter and it was different. Called Mini of Langley (Langley B.C. Canada) who informed me that they gave me the wrong filter. I suggested that seeing as how it was their mistake and I was in a bit of a bind I should put the old filter back in and THEY should change the filter for me. They didn't jump at the chance to make it right so I will change it myself (an easy job) and use another dealer for service in the future..
Anyway on to my problem. The filter housing has a spring in it and the old filter had a plastic insert that is removable. The new filter does not have this plastic insert.Should I remove the insert from the old filter and insert it in the new filter. Any u-tube videos I've seen do NOT show the spring in the filter housing.

Regards

Fred

Hopefully my pictures should help. Yes, put the plastic insert in the new filter.

The plastic part was suppose to stay in the cap with the spring. We get this call all the time that people think they have the wrong filter. If you are lucky you can pull the plastic center out and put it with the spring back in the cap then install the new filter.
If that doesn't work you have to get the complete new oil filter housing as the newer design doesn't have the plastic part and spring in the cap. They changed the housing so it is all a new design built into the other end.

At $229 I’d find a way to put the plastic back.

So I finally got the correct oil filter and tried to change it. I took the old filter off the basket and put on the new one. Changed the o-ring as well. But try as I might, I could NOT get the filter housing back on. Both filters appear to be the same height but I can NOT start to thread it on without cross threading it.So I put the old filter back in and had no problem screwing it down. Tried the same with NO filter inside and it went on just fine as well. Are there any tricks to doing this.I don't want to take it to a dealer simply to change the filter.

Regards

When I changed mine, it took massive force to get the old filter off of the basket. The new one was very tight and difficult to put on. Had to really push it on to get it all of the way in..I was afraid I was going to crush it...but I did not...Not sure if that is going to help you
