oil gauge

Are these factory installed gauges?

The oil temp gauge isn't working and I assume it's a faulty oil temp sensor. Where is the oil temp sensor located?

"Possibly..!"
Yes the factory did install them.
If you watch, you can buy them here on this site (I think there's a set for sale now) and on E-Bay. So that means, that they aren't necessarily..."factory" installed.

regardless though, does anyone know where I can look for the sensor and where to buy another one if it's faulty?

On vehicles equipped with the oil temperature gauge, the sensor (p/n 82940004581) doubles as the oil drain plug at rear of pan. There’s a wire that connects to it.

IIRC these were installed at the factory on the MC40. They were a dealer option or available as an OEM accessory. I've got them on my car and will remove them if I ever sell it to buy a GP. They're that rare.

Those are standard VDO gauges. I would question if they were the original gauges as they have black faces instead of a white/cream face. Doesn't matter as VDO makes very good gauges. They are very easy to install, all it takes is the proper sending unit.

There was a color change for the gauges at some point. In 2008 the silver were discontinued with black gauges remaining available. Realoem has details.

Thanks guys, I’ll check the oil plug. BTW, they are the same color as the speedo. Bad photo I guess, but they for sure aren’t black.

thanks. With this knowledge I hope they either forgot to plug it back on after an oil change.

Easy enough to check!
Also possible is that it’s not even there anymore.

Well I was able to take a sec and get under the car to see. It just has a regular oil plug installed. I did see what looked like shrink tube with maybe some wire in it. I'll investigate later on a day off. I did however notice I probably have a slight leak on the power steering hose I need to remedy

Yes, Looks like they removed the sensor and thats why you have oil temp function. I would check the wires going from the unit and see if you can find them, if not or if they are somewhat there, you might have to make your own wires to feed to that sensor. Get the sensor from us and then make wires to fit.

My guess is someone had a leak or forgot the sensor and they just took it out.

Dont forget that crush washer'.

Be prepared there's probably a reason they removed the sensor. They had very short threads and caused the oil pan plug threads to get stripped out. So that might have happened and they put the longer factory style plug back in. That was the case with mine and it was so bad that I had to re-tap the drain plug up a size to a M16. I decided to drill and tap a separate hole for the sensor and I would consider that if you're handy. I also had a power steering pump hose leak and it's a good time to remove all of that and replace the hoses...it gives you the clearance you need to retap the pan if you need.

You can see some photos in my build thread starting at post #100...

Also, as a note so you don't get confused, I took the uber rare center console gauges and installed them in the uber rare steering column gauge pod... uber uber rare :P

Good luck.

You may qualify for the factory recall on the p/s pump & fan on your MINI.
It's been reported that if the associated p/s hoses are leaking, MINI will replace those as well.

Click HERE and enter your VIN to check your vehicle.

Read about the recall HERE & HERE.

I am new to the site, so apologize if there is an easier way to find this information.

I cant find the oil temp sensor 82940004581 anywhere. Any one know where I can pick one up? Is there an equivalent to it?

That sucks, your correct. I just checked where I bought mine and it’s no longer available. If you know the bolt size, thread pitch, maybe you can match something up. I just looked on Amazon for oil temp sensor and there were a few that look promising as a replacement.

Do I have a treat for you guys! I looked for these for a couple of years. Search eBay for:

Temperature Sensor NTC Motor Oil VDO A2C1754920001

These are manufactured in Latvia (VDO no longer makes them) so it takes a while to get one ($23 + shipping) but it is the correct part. I ordered one for my MC40 and it works perfectly.

Thanks so much for that link. I scored one of the gauge pods for $75. How about a link to the wiring kit and chrome bezels lol. Looks like it’s out of stock. He’s on vacation until the 16th. Hopefully it can still be ordered when he gets back.

Yep, search by Oem MINI part number or by brand "shop by brand" as we have so much on our site for MINI, sometime things get lost in the search.
