Electrical Rookie gauge question
Rookie gauge question
I tried to search for "oil temperature gauge" and I got back only three threads, so I must apologize in advance for the rookie-ness of my gauge question. I would like to have gauges for coolant and oil temp and have become overwhelmed with the multitude of options. I'm leaning towards getting the Alta Water Temp pod, another pod and then the Prosport Oil Temp gauge. My question is do any of ya'll know how the oil temp sensor mounts and how difficult that would be to install? Maggie (per sig below) is only just 6 months old so I'm hesitant in doing anything that could void that pristine warranty. I would not mind spending $$$ for an OBD gauge, like what PLX has, however, I only really want to see water and oil temps, right now. I cannot tell if the oil temp is an output of OBD which makes me unsure about about >any< OBD gauge.
Again, I apologize for my CRM and hope that ya'll will be able to help me unscrew myself. Thanks.
Cheers!!

I did have the Prosport gauges from ALTA, but I felt as though they were poorly designed. Bright? YES! A. Color didnt match, black faced, and B. the set pins rattled like crazy (had one set in my R56 and one in my dads)
I just switched the AutoMeter, that I bought from Aaron at Outmotoring. The Water temp reads off of the coolant reservoir with a thermal coupler.
For install instructions check

hope this helps

OBDII data stream has the water temp only. Since I don't have a turbo the water only is great for me with the PLX gauge, but if I had a turbo I would want oil temp for sure.
Oil temp you will have to install an oil temp sender somewhere. There are a few options, I don't know what is the most accurate way to measure oil temp, but I have seen the following options in the past: 1. At the pressure sensor port (using a T), 2. drill and weld on a bung to the oil pan, 3. get a sensor mounted into a bolt that you then use as the oil pan plug, 4. or find an oil line you can cut and splice a sensor unit into.

The thread below has a lot of good information about gauges:

This is a link to the Marshall Factory site which show all there gauges:

And last here is a link to Custom MINI (note it is best to call Steve and discuss over the phone -- He gives great service and can walk you thru the install).

Get a Scangauge II because You can view 4 gauges simultaneously with it. Then spend $ on the stuffs that can't be view through the Scanguage, such as (coolant temp, oil pressure and....ect)
I use mine for water temp, Air/fuel ratio, turbo boost, intake air temp.
As far as measuring the Oil Pressure you will need the following items:
Tapless Adapter $75
http://www.cravenspeed.com/index.php?productID=220
Defi Red Racer PSI Gauge $231.24 (call Justin for a deal)
http://www.jscspeed.com/catalog/Univ...surements.html
I would stay away from the Prosport and get the DEFI or AUTOMETER !

Thanks for the input and I'll take a look at these, too. I was thinking of some more sophisticated OBD solution after the dial gauges and the Scangauge might be the way to go.
