R50/53 wearing my lovely wife down...
It is starting to work. This morning in the classified section of the local paper was a picture of a MINI with a little blurb with photo that said something about the success BMW was experiencing with these cars and that they had sold over 105,000 in 9 months. I was kind of curious as to who paid for this placement because the nearest MINI dealer is in Kansas City or St. Louis each about a 3 hour drive. Anyway, the beautiful wife pointed it out and I said something bright, like,"see". She then asked do I really want my BRG MINI S with all packages that badly. I said I don't think I have ever wanted a car since my first one over 25 years ago more. She then said... why don't you just buy it. I then said that I wanted her to want it to. She is definitely weakening! In 2 weeks we go for the final test drive... I can feel her writing the check for deposit now!
It was a very hopeful morning. The real issue is that we don't need a car, but need and want are two very different things!

>>I had the same "discussions" with my wife with the MINI. After a couple of months, I wore here down and we bought a MCS in July. She can't believe all the attention we get driving around (frankly, I have grown tired of it), and we take a lot of nice day and weekend trips now. After I got our MCS, my wife thought I would stop talking about the MINI, but I really love this car! I hope you can persuade your wife into getting this car because it is totally worth it!

Congrats on nearly closing the deal with the wifely approval. I know from hard-learned experience what those kinds of negotiations can be like.
Fortunately for me, my St. Bernard is just happy to go for a ride in the car, so it was a pretty soft sell in my situation, and I don't even have to give him a diamond tennis bracelet to seal the deal

I'm so glad I didn't have to work on convincing anyone before buying my MINI. Except of course my mother who was and still is (no matter how many articles I show her) convinced that it's a death trap.

I tell my wife that every day. Good luck to you. After the test drive I'm sure you will be leaving a deposit.
This sounds so familiar... I had to wheedle, cajole, umm... BEG hubby to agree to the MINI. I also had to promise to never ever give him grief about his "toys" (i.e. electronic equipment and power tools) again. That will be tough, for sure, but I don't want to be a hypocrite. I, too, did not NEED a new car. But boy, I haven't WANTED a material thing this badly since I was about 12! All part of the MINI making me feel like a kid again... or at least it will once it arrives!
Cheers,
Leslie

Here is a good argument for buying a MINI that might work for some of you dreamers:
Buying a MINI is a real opportunity to "simplify your life" and make some positive changes with your lifestyle choices.
I am in the process of moving cross country and am basically unburdening myself with all of the unnecessary possessions that are only adding quantity rather than quality to my life. I have given away half of my possessions, and am in the process of getting rid of half of what now remains. Only the very highest quality, most useful possessions get to come along with me.
Everything that I own that does not fit with my new MINI-lifestyle and MINI-related business must go!
For instance, I do not need to keep an archive of all the Levi's I have purchased and worn in the last decade. Three pairs are sufficient: one nice new pair, one worn-in pair, and one pair suitable for getting dirty in. When the third pair becomes too stained, worn, or torn, it is no longer welcome in my closet or in my life.
I am looking at this disgusting pile of consumer crap that I have collected and going through it asking myself "Will it fit in my MINI?" If the answer is no, it goes to Goodwill.
As a bonus, I am going to have a very nice and legitimate tax-write off as I give away my hoard of consumer crap from Best-Buy, Target, and Walmart that I bought because I thought that the object in life was to surround myself with consumer goods.

When my wife first saw the new Mini it was love at first sight. She had to have one and eventually got one. Kinda wish I had the same reaction from her that her new Mini got when we first met. Good thing I'm not the jealous type.

It was my wife's car that was nearing the end of its usefulness. She didn't quite know what a MINI was.
I took her to the dealer and let her do the first test-drive.
No convincing necessary.
We did go back for a second test drive with one of our CD's to "test" the sound system while driving. It was just an excuse to drive the car, we had the check for the deposit with us, it was a done deal.
Now if I could only hurry the system along a little faster.
I stopped at our dealer yesterday and they said their MCS allocation was down this month and our target month of February may slip to March.
Ah well, I'll shut up and get back in line.

It is not that she doesn't like the car, but it isn't a Lexus. The Lexus service guys treat her like royalty, and she has come to like it. Last weekend we drove the I30 Lexus sports car thing for a loaner while they worked on some little thing on her RX300. We went out to the country and drove madly around thru the hills. I am sure she thought I would be happy with it instead of a MINI. She is wrong. She pointed out that it even had the funky round speedo. I explained that while I wouldn't deny it was a nice car, I had zero interest in owning it. It was just a car.
I have it bad!
Have a nice thanksgiving all!
