Build gp intercooler

So I should have bought a GP intercooler years ago when they were $500. well today they are $1500 and up. But we can get stock intercoolers all day for $80 each from wrecking yards. Is it safe to say that by looking a pictures a Gp intercooler is just 2 stock intercoolers grafted together. It sure looks like it by the weld marks. So say I was a competent welder with Al. Could I take 2 stock intercoolers and build my own GP intercooler?

If you have the fabrication skills and the time, sure...give it a shot. The only person that can answer that "can I do it?" question is going to be you

there was a similar thread to this a couple of years ago when the price was just starting to climb, never heard of the turn out. but technically it would be possible. and you would have a hell of a business

Could be done, just would take time to fab. Yes the prices shot up earlier this year. If we carry an aftermarket direct replacement in the future, we will let you know.

I'm assuming that it would be great for a track car where you are always moving and there way always air flowing through the IC.....but for a street car in stop and go traffic, won't all of that extra surface area on the extra thick intercooler soak up heat like crazy?? I would that that for a street car....a big IC would not be what you want....but maybe I'm wrong.

there is more to heat up, BUT the stock intercooler cools off relatively quickly

And here in lies the issue with most of the larger aftermarket I/C's (all but one if i remember correctly, but don't remember which one) and possibly a custom...
(You wouldn't know until you try)

Heat Soak....

What makes the GPIC so good for a track car without having negative effects on the street is that it shed heat as rapidly as the stock I/C, even though it has the larger surface area.

Zombie thread, I know, but this info needs to be found by those looking for it:

Red is RPM, white is IAT. It cools down almost as fast as it heats up due to the boost (yellow) at WOT.

This is the GP clone intercooler that Way Motor Works and some others sell....
