LOL - no.

There's no need for one. Turbo, not Super...

But I have been eyeing off the GP intercooler for my R53.

Don't worry - the JCW parts for the R56 are due out soon. They'll give you a power boost. And of course there will be plenty of aftermarket options as well.

The R56 MCS comes from the factory with a front-mounted air-to-air intercooler. It performs quite well too, I may add. There will no doubt be replacement upgrade intercoolers for the R56 MCS soon [ALTA is working on one as we speak], however in the meantime there are other areas of the engine that should be upgraded before the intercooler, IMO.

The idea of adapting an R53 GP intercooler is an interesting idea, as the compressor outlet and charge pipe would be very near to the R53's IC location. At worst you'd give up fantastic front-mounted ambient airflow, and at best you'd improve the already awesome spool time by reducing charge pipe volume.

--->Edge: I'm not sure what you mean by saying the R56 doesn't need an intercooler because it's turbo; that's far from true. Turbo compressor outlet temperatures can reach 350F, far too hot to go into the engine un-cooled. Outright saying it's not possible is hardly true; and after thinking about it for a moment, it's actually a good brainstorming idea for bringing an R53 flair to the R56 while reducing charge pipe volume. I haven't looked under the bonnet regarding engine clearance, however with the Euro ped safety regs, I'd bet there's enough room to stuff an IC on top of the engine like the R53 did.

Cheers,
Ryan

Ryan,

I stand corrected, but clearly the GP Intercooler was not designed to fit an R56 in any way shape or form.

If someone tries it, pulls it off, and benefits from it, all power to them.

When I meant "no need", I meant specifically for the R53-style intercooler, which was designed for the (completely different) layout of the Supercharged R53 engine, not the Turbocharged R56 engine. Clearly every engine can always benefit from cooler air.

Again, WRT the GP IC, if I'm proven wrong by experimental folks such as yourself, then hey - that's fascinating!

Cool thanks for clarifying your post Edge. You're right that it's certainly not a bolt-on part in any way; but that said experimental folks like me rarely concern themselves with such conveniences as the easy way! LOL

Alas, a reason for the faux hood scoop opening
