W10b16 vs w11b16

What is the difference in the BLOCK, if any, for the W11 and W10? I know that the W11 internals and pistons are probably beefed up for the FI setup in the S model vs the base. BUT, is the physical upper and lower block any different? I would imagine it's just the internals that changed and the 1.6 block is the same across the board.

I'm going to start another thread about the build and journey I am about to take in my $1,800 Mini S turned out to be blown block adventure, but I need to jump on some important questions frist.

2003 Cooper S with a huge hole in the block.

Looking to source a new block, or a short block if the internals turn out to be shot.

I was hoping the internal changes were minimal between the non-s and the s, but I was wrong. Different crank and pistons.

Now I just need to know if the block is the same between them all.

The knockouts for the waterpump are different if I recall...
Just get the right block. You are making it more complicated than needed.
There are machineing differences too...namely different parts are used for bearings.

No oil squirt ports in the NON-S Blocks

Now THAT is a good tell.

So if it is a SC block, there are oil channels and spouts for the oil squirters.

If it's a NON S block, then there are no squirters or ways to install them? I would imagine the non S block wouldn't even have the holes to add them if you wanted to.

There are not drilled and tapped from the factory, you could drill and tap it yourself. But it seems like a huge amount of work.

I agree.

I am going to plan on a W11b16 engine block or short block.

Now the fun part will be finding one.

The W11 has forged internals (crank, rods, and maybe even the pistons). Plus it has oil squirters that cool the underside of the pistons.

If you are going with the supercharged S or going turbo, this is the only engine you want to go with.

At the time, it did suck that they offered fully rebuilt or new short blocks for the W10 for very cheap. The best way to get a W11 is to buy a low mileage used one. Which reminds me that I have a fully assembled head I need to sell.

I've been trying to find more specifics on the differences between the W10 and the W1 and though this thread does shed a little light on the subject I still need to know more.

It started out with trying to find a donor car for my CVT to standard transmission, I'm still planning this out and now thinking a whole dang engine and trans. swap may be in order.. why would Mini(BMW) so something like this, the W11 should have been used in all Minis and now someone like me has to make a huge decision. DO I bother and do all the work or just have a 2nd Cooper as a project car and leave my R50 as a mileage maker.. SOmeone wanna donate an R53??? LMAO!

The main difference is the block and the internals in that block. One block was made for a forced induction platform(super/turbocharged) and the other wasn't. So one block has forged internals and oil squirters to cool the pistons and the other does not require that level of hardware.
I do believe the heads are exactly the same. The magic is in the block differences.

The valves are different. S valves are sodium filled, and the justa’s are not, IIRC.
