Maybe I'm just a non reader.... or poor search user.... but could not find if R53 needs battery registration done when replacing the battery. Does the R53 have a "smart" charging system like the R56, BMW's, etc.? I know some folks just plunk in a new battery and say "no problem" but also know not correct thing to do in many of newer cars. Thanks!
I've switched from the oem battery, to a Optima Red Top and I'm now running a Odyssey PC680 (small battery) and never had any problems in the last 7 years. The car is stored during winter, so there's no battery in it for 5 months.
I've heard about the registration thing a bunch of times, apparently it would be to "adapt" the alternator charging to the battery being used, but alternators have regulators and will put more amps out if needed. You can call your local dealer to ask, I just have some doubts about this being required. Not to mention that the only thing I've seen in my Bentley manual was about reseting the power windows and sunroof, something that I never had to do and I mess with my battery at least twice a year.

The Odyssey will be my next upgrade. Have them in Waverunners and boat and love them.
When you say small what are you referrring to? In relation to the original battery?
No, the R53 does not have an IBS unit. We have a battery replacement tech article on our site (linked below. It has some great info that you can review and answer any questions you may have about the battery replacement for R50/R52/R53.
I'm in the market for a new battery and i was wondering about the Odyssey PC680 and the Optima Yellow top 8071-167 D51/8073-167 D51R (reverse polarity) dont know what the difference is. Also want something that will fit in the battery bay tray and will be tight down using the stock method. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This car will be 99% used for track use but will be driven to the track ect.

Yellow Top will fit in the hole and most likely work with the stock hold down bracket from what I've seen. The PC680 is a small battery and you will need an adpater or custom mount for it. The polarity thing is probably refering to the - and + poles locations. You want to positive to be on the right side of the battery, otherwise the cables won't reach.

Thanks for the quick reply. I personally want to get the PS680 because of the weight. Any input on it? I will be using my car mostly for track use but will be setting between and my take it out once in a while to play with the boys lol. I saw the CCA is like 170 and all. Saw a bunch of PS680 with a letter or several letters after the number and have been looking to try to find out what the letters mean but no description of what it means.
Finally found my my answers. The letters stand for Metal Jack and some come with terminals ect.
Yeah mine didn't so had to buy them separately. As for the CCA, it may seems low, but my car starts every times. Doesn't sound like it's struggling or anything. I've had the battery for two months, so I can't tell you if it's bulletproof or not yet! I avoid doing anything that involves leaving something on while the car is off (listening to the radio while cleaning it, etc) as the reserve is 30 minutes, which is a 1/3 of a normal battery.
I ordered the PC680 and terminals. Also got the 5W Solar Battery Tender. Waiting to get the battery to see if i can make the stock work or get the holder for it. I'm not doing the delete like you yet at least lol.
The Odyssey PC680 was useless in the winter, so I got a Braille B2015. It's still only 15lbs, and while it's not the perfect winter solution it's CCA rating of 425A is far better than the Odyssey's 170A.

Wouldn't a jump do the trick? I dont plan on driving this car in winter more then likely it will just sit. Ill turn it on just to get things going and all. Maybe drive it around the block. I guess ill keep this other battery in mind let see how this one perform.
