I better call soon. Never had any problems with PS but it always leaks around the reservoir but has been doing it since new.
Who knows what Seattle Mini will say.
Not sure if they're replacing the reservoir or not but you could always just replace the O ring on the cap and that should fix the problem. Just did it to mine and haven't had any issues yet.
I am going to pick up my 2003 R50 today from the dealership. They ordered a new pump and fan under the recall. It took a few days to get the parts in because of high demand with the recall just recently going "live". My mechanic had mentioned a very slight power steering leak last time I was in his shop so I thought maybe that was why they determined I needed a new pump. But the service tech said the system seemed to be working fine... under the recall if the pump was produced before a certain date MINI was replacing them no matter what. Which is good because that is what a recall should be.
I live 5 hours or 315 miles from the nearest dealer. So that's the whole day to get there, then a few hours the next day at the dealer, then another day getting back. That's the pits and I don't have any steering problems.
Im in no hurry to get my pump changed. It works fine so there is no reason to take it in. The recall isn't going away, they haven't said there is a time limit from what I've seen so far. I'm not sure, but I don't think safety recalls ever expire. Maybe someone else knows.
If it goes while I'm driving it's not like I won't be able to steer. If you think the people that drive the Mini wouldn't be able to steer without the pump then I would take it in sooner. Over the last couple years I've read that some peoples pump just go with no warning.
Maybe you are making the right choice Shawnn. I got my R50 back last Thursday from the dealership with a brand new pump/fan. The next morning I noticed fluid on the garage floor while backing out. Called the service dept and left a message. Haven't gotten back to me yet. And then driving into work this morning the service engine light came on (which has never come on in the year plus I have owned the car) and now I hear a not-too-loud but high pitched whine at idle and low speeds. What did they do to my Mini?!
Took the car in today for its annual oil change to Seattle Mini.
I did not mention anything about the recall. My SA told me my car is part of this recalll and if I wanted it taken care of while the car was in. I declined due to my schedule.
So long story short: They had all the parts in stock, they did not need to "inspect" the car and I will be getting a new pump and fan with no questions asked.
Not sure why others are experiencing different encounters with the dealer.

No problem at all. I just took mine in Monday and they replaced the pump, fan, and fan bracket. So if anyone is getting it done I would definitely recommend replacing your reservoir gasket and maybe even the PS lines if you want the entire job done at once and all of the leaks to stop. I posted up a DIY on the PS lines if you would like to look at doing the lines yourself as it's actually very easy and rounds off the PS system maintenance nicely.
I had the recall done in December. As everyone stated, they do not replace the hoses or the reservoir.
I have plenty of CHF-11S on hand from replacing a power steering hose and reservoir on my wife's Volvo.
Recently I found that I still had a brand new power steering reservoir I had ordered for my BMW E46 (now sold) that is the same part number as the MINI's.
So I guess I should order the hoses and complete the overhaul of the system...
I didn't find that one detailed enough so I made my own. But yes that's the kit I got from ECS as well as the o-ring for the reservoir. As usual quality products from ECS so no issues there, or with the o-ring since you know, it's an o-ring...
Recall done today. I haven't had any problems, but they tested
the pump and deemed it defective and replaced the pump and
cooling fan for free, but I also had them replace the leaking feed
and return lines at my expense. Hope it's good for another 13 years.

That's awesome that they covered the fan, as well.
Didn't think they would cover that.
