Spark Plug/Wire/Coil Pack Suggestion

Doing a tuneup on my R53. Only mod I have is a Borla exhaust. Engine is at 183,000 miles.

Looking for suggestions for the plugs, wires, and coil-pack.

According to many who have commented in the past, go stock. Spending more on aftermarket won't give better performance- maybe worse. Save the money for different upgrades.

I would not replace with a stock coil because the metal mis-match between the coil terminals and spark plug wire connections tend to cause corrosion. Look for a coil with brass terminals such as Screamin Demon, MSD, or Beru.
I like NGK spark plugs.
Aftermarket wires will not improve performance but can add a little color to the engine compartment.

In general I am not a fan of the MSD Coil because of the mounting issues due to needing special bolts. Since the M7 kit comes with new bolts that should resolve that issue. The M7 kit is good but a little expensive at $229.

Another good option is the WMW kit at $175. It uses the Screamin Demon coil instead of the MSD coil with NGK plugs and red wires.

get a 15/17% supercharger reduction pully, it will give a good bit of kick to the car, but you will need to buy some colder running plugs or an intercooler becuase the larger the pully the hotter the air will be.

What model are the NGK spark plugs for the S? Way Motor Works doesn't list it.

For standard Cooper S R53: NGK BKR6EQUP

If you have JCW or an aftermarket supercharger pulley, one range colder: BKR7EQUP

Yes, NGK BKR7EQUP (4285) are correct for JCW or pulley upgrade and NGK BKR6EQUP (3199) for OEM plug. We have some information about installing a High Performance Coil Pack HERE that you can take a look at.

I used the MSD coil and wires . There is no need for new hardware. Just remove the bolts and save the rubber isolators. Grip the tube around the bolt with locking pliers. Place the bolt loosely in a vise (should be able to wiggle). Hit the pliers with a small hammer to separate below the washer. Install new coil with factory bolts and isolators. The MSD looks good and is plug and play.

Don't waste your money on MSD.
Just use stock ones.

Looks like there's a lot of controversy over this topic lol. I've had so many different answers.

stock is most cost effiecient, aftermarket ones don't actually increase performance, they can when your motor is a fully built motor. Unless you want bling, get which ever one you want. each of them have their potential issues. as for wires typically you want something with a copper core, or even gold/silver. steel is meh. Mostly for looks. Plugs, you get Brisk Silver plugs for performance but replace every 5-10k miles, or iridium to last a long time. and this performance difference could only really be a few HP over time. (racing usually wants these)

then you already have the spark plug ranges for NTK.

OEM: corrosion on post #3 Dielectric grease works and prevents. usually take a long time anyways
MSD: some of them had fitment issues
Screamin: had some issues back in the day back feeding voltage to the ECU.

this is all the info I can remember off the top of my head.

Highly suggest Magnecor wires, stick with the stock coil pack and use NGK plugs.

+1 for the stock coil. I have the MSD (it was already on my car when I bought it) and I got to replace the valve cover because I over tightened the bolts and cracked my valve cover which made it leak oil all over the place.

Stick with the stock coil and try Nology wires & 2 step colder plugs.

It's always interesting to read so many different opinions on something so simple as plugs and wires.
Here are the facts:
MSD coil doesn't fit right without new hardware or modifying existing
there is NO HP in plug wires no matter what they advertise
We have used every brand of plug and found the NGK to be the most reliable
To this day I have NOT had any cars come in with failed ECU due to a screamin demon coil, still waiting to see this myth for real and I've sold many of these.
If you order the Screamin Demon coil from WMW you do NOT need any modification to install use the stock bolts, sleeves, and rubbers to mount.

Over the last 13yrs of working on MINIs we've seen it all so that is why we put our ignition package together as it was cost effective and fit right. I use it on my own car and installed on 100s of MINIs with no issue and will continue to recommend it.
http://www.waymotorworks.com/wmw-ignition-package.html
If you just need wires check out our WMW wires as they are affordable and work just as well as wires that cost 4x as much.

The stock coil isn't bad, but does cost more

Thank you for this information. I'm definitely going to go with your package. You should see my order shortly

I sold my r53 for a 2015 Tundra and am now working on my wife's 03' R50.

She still has the original coil with 100k on it. I will be purchasing new plug wires and want to know if I should change the coil if it hasn't caused any issues. Does the coil need to be replaced at intervals or do you think she's good?

If you think she needs to replace the coil what do you recommend on Wires and coil - 03' R50 with NO mods (she hates mods).

I want to try and increase her performance a little. She gets cut off on the highway ALL THE TIME. Her car has NO power behind it esp. when the A/C is on!!

Unless your car is misfiring, a new coil pack will do exactly zero for you. The solution to that expensive Mini OE coil pack is to buy a Dodge Neon or PT Cruiser coil pack, like this:

Just check for corrosion on the coil terminals where the plug wires attach. If corroded clean them, add dielectric grease, and it should be good for many more miles. I switched to a coil with brass terminals to eliminate the corrosion issue. But as stated no power gain to be had with aftermarket coil.

MINI recommends an interval of 100,000 miles for plugs. However, you never really quite know how long the plugs are going to last, or you may forget to do it if you don't setup a yearly schedule. We recommend inspecting/changing if needed every 30k miles. We have ignition kits HERE for your R50, which includes all that you'll need to replace (coil, plugs and wires) for maintenance reasons. Otherwise, just the plugs NGK HERE and Beru wires HERE. Let me know if you have any questions.

Those are for an R53 though. She has an R50.

Is it the same thing as far as ignition kit?

Stage I Ignition Pak, (R53) Part #: 53-3M7750

I will order this if its going to work.

I just replaced plugs, wires and the coil pack mainly due to age all with OEM. Car only has 55K miles and it definitely runs smoother.

No, that is not for your R50. It's highlighted in green at the links, but this might be easier. The plug is HERE or the Ignition kit is HERE. Let me know if you have any questions.
