R50/53 Extreme Oil Leak :eek2: Help

Extreme Oil Leak :eek2: Help

I recently changed the oil on my 2004 R53 with 108K miles. After i changed the oil, i re-installed the drain plug, oil filter, and the cap, and dip-stick as well.

Then all of the oil proceeded to leak out when the car was turned on. I managed to figure out where the oil was leaking from but I don't know what this part is called or how to fix it. Can somebody please help?

The oil is leaking from the shiny, box looking thing that has 2 hoses connected to it. How do i fix this problem?

The oil is leaking from the oil filter cap. You might have cross threaded the cap or damaged the o-ring when installing it. Both are very easy to do inadvertently.

Don't think that oil getts that far down in the engine bay by choice. Did you install the oil filter housing gasket? It looks to me that oil is leakig down from above.

been there done that.

the oring on the oil filter housing splits wide open if its not oiled and threaded in correctly the first few tries.

pull the oil filter housing and inspect oring.

Is it o-Ring on the oil filter that the leak is coming from, or is it the Oil Cooler that is leaking?

Is your CV boot cracked on that side? It sure looks like you have a lot of grease thrown up on those oil cooler hoses....something to take a look at. Mine looked just like that when it had a small rip in it....

Any like everyone else said......something didn't go right when you threaded the oil filter housing and gasket back on. Take it all off again see what's going on....that's where the oil is coming from

The circled thing is an oil cooler....
I would clean stuff up...start the car and watch(with lots of oil)...
And watch....with an oil change, the most likely failure is the o-ring on the filter housing..
The oil cooler COULD fail at anytime....but odd coincidence it would fail with an oil change.....
It DOES seem to have some grease/goopy stuff...maybe oil, but maybe from a split CV boot joint as noted....

You have too look....lol.different areas....should not be hard to figure out...
Use some brake clean, degrease the care a, fill the oil, then start the car, and watch.

As stated it's very common to split the o-ring that you replaced in the oil filter hosing..how do you know you botched it?

When you are tightening it down if it starts off hard-ish to turn (you can hear the rubber gasket squeaking)...then all of the sudden it gets really easy - you have just successfully sheared the o-ring.

One trick that I think zippy posted a while ago - when reinstalling the filter housing is to turn to the left first to make sure you aren't cross threading anything AND always start by hand - never with a wrench.
