Quick questions about cooper s options -

Im looking into buying a 1st gen Cooper S and have a couple questions .

Firstly , do the 03 Minis come with a headlight option or are all models equiped with the HID XENON lights?

Also , if a Mini does not have the harmon kardon sound package what is the base sound system? Are they're any ways of identifying if it is the HK package?

Thanks !

easy questions!

no not all minis have HID lights, that is an option, the halogens look like normal reflector lights

the preface lift HIDs have a cloudy lense with a bunch of focusing lines and a clear lense for turn signals
the facelift HIDs have projector lenses

the HK system is an option as well, the speaker covers will be grey and the larger tweeters will have harmon Khardon written around them, there will also be an AMP in the passenger side boot wall

i cannot answer the base system, and truly have never heard it =)

The base is really not that good at all. But if you find a Mini you really like and it doesn't have H/K then a stereo upgrade would be worth it.

For the H/K system they will have the silver color grilles and notable the large lower speaker in the front lower door will says Harman / Kardon.

These systems have a separate amp 65129146708 for the hardtop . Sets in the trunk behind the side carpet cover.

I believe the basic stereo system does not have a separate amp and run off of the deck. Same speaker locations as the HK, has different covers.

There used to be an upgrade fro the stock system called the MINI DPSM , but it is now NLA in aftermarket factory MINI world. Sounded good too.

Thanks

It is MUCH simpler to upgrade the non-hk system....
The wiring in the HK, and amp setup is nonstandard.....it must be ripped out and rewired......the amps are $$$, and failure is common..... The actual head unit is the same....
PS....THE "base" stereo was not shipped yo the us...the mid level unit was made the std us unit....
The pre-2005 xenons are a bit trouble prone...the ignitors are not made to be replaced....later ones the ignators are swappable, and light output is MUCH BETTER....
There were tens of thousands of option comb's on MINI'S.....so trying find a specific combo will be hard....most cars were sold custom spec (except for early 2002 prelauch dealer spec)till early 2006....usually as long as 6 months before production.
Look carefully....
Mini's REQUIRE good care and mataince..... Any less and they become $$$ money pits.....same for driving habits....driven well, they are good cars, but abused.....and put away wet...run!!
