MCS gas cap pitting

What a nice piece of chrome, at least it was. After 14 months it has begun to pit. The car has been waxed about 4 -5 times, but even if it never was, isn't it a little too soon to start aging out?

Anyone else? Or did I get a bad one?

regards,
Red

22 months, 47k miles and no pits here. Do you drive through sand storms?

Godspeed.

i have a pitting/chrome bubbling problem on my 2003 mcs gas cap and on one door pull that started within a few months of my getting the car. all the other chrome is perfect.

my dealer said that it would have to be looked at my the local bmw tech rep., but i haven't met him yet.

mini usa alluded to a chrome plating problem on some parts.

Thanks! I will check with the dealer.

But I figured cosmetic stuff is not covered.

I had a bmw R12c motorcycle which was notorious for chrome problems. The BMW bike dealers replaced that stuff under warranty no questions asked. Unless you are causing the problem somehow the dealer should replace it.

When my 03 MCs was in this week for the recent recalls (PCV hose and computer update for tank evaporation), my dealer gladly put a new chrome cap on.

Just an FYI for those with less than perfect chrome.

13 and a half month old 2004 MCS with 15K miles and perfect chrome gas cap.

Certainly, this has not been an issue with my car.

two years, 27,000 miles no pitting.

You might want to see if your neighbor's Great Dane has been mistaking your MCS for a fire hydrant.

No big dogs in the neighborhood, and my toy poodle can't reach it. Glad and surprised to hear I am the only one with a chrome problem.
But no more!

Cooper4Us... just a word of warning: Since all of us with problems are FULLY aware of your perfect vehicles, I'd keep your (and more specifically, your MINIs) whereabouts classified. Lest you rouse one morning to find one of your MINIs missing, replaced with an IB/W MCS complete w/ stumble, cold start, 4 windscreens, 3 boot latches, 2 recalls, glitchy electronics and pitting gas cap.

(Which is to say that I, too, have pitting chrome on my gas cap. I'd never brought it up with the dealer because I 1. try to avoid them at all cost, and 2. figured that they'd refuse coverage because it's just cosmetic.)

There was a thread on this issue some time ago -- don't know if there's any more info there, but it's definitely not just you.
