New K&N filter, now starving for air?

OK, so, I checked the filter in my Dinan CAI; stock Dinan filter was way dirty. Replaced it with the recommended K&N RU-1480 filter, then went out for a drive.

Drove it for a few blocks out of the neighborhood, seemed like it was fine. Get to my favorite local straightaway and floored it in first gear around 4,000 RPM and it lost power for a second. It felt like wasn't getting air for about a second or two, then took off with full power. I drove it around for a few minutes but couldn't reproduce the problem, so I was wondering if it was just a fluke.

Left the store a bit later, zoomed down the road in first, shifted to second and floored it.... it happened again, same thing. Doesn't bog, just hardly any power at all for a second then it takes off. Couldn't make it repeat for the rest of the drive home. Parked it, popped the hood, checked it out. Can't find anything wrong on visual inspection. Didn't do anything else to the car but change the filter. Scratching my head on this one. The car is out of service for a few days anyway while I do some other maintenance to it, but does anyone have suggestions when I crank it up again?

Yeah, that will be the first thing I do. Just wish the problem was easier to reproduce, it would make diagnosing it a lot easier.

Yeah, I saw that, but $30 shipped (Amazon Prime) for this one is hard to beat. Can't believe the filter itself would cause this problem, but you never know.

The first thing I thought about was a friend who installed a new filter on the CAI of his SRT Charger. Went out for a drive and it just wouldn't run worth a damn. Got home, opened the hood, and he'd forgotten to take the plastic off of the filter. It looked like a crushed beer can, that 6.4L Hemi tried to suck it into the motor. This K&N didn't come wrapped in plastic, though.

That's what I was thinking might be the case when it first happened. As dirty as the old filter was, it should be getting more air. But I'd rather ask a question to make sure everything is OK than to assume that there isn't a problem and do some damage.

Think I should reset the ECU?

wouldnt hurt, the fuel trims are prolly a tad low, so when it sees this extra air flow it needs to adjust the trims for more fuel.

seems logical, esspecially since youve been driving around with that filtr for #of months

Well, to update, I reset the ECU yesterday before I headed out for a long test drive, and it ran flawless. No starving for air at all. So the fix was either (A) letting the ECU adapt, or (B) putting the red mirror caps on. Those are the only changes I made.
