R50/53 Did I get ripped-off?
Did I get ripped-off?
I hope this is not a rip-off:
I need a new alternator for my '05 R53
I know Denso is the original manufacturer. It seems you can find them at $350 to $400 all day long. The Dealership charges 6 to $700 for the same part.
I found this at Rock Auto. I hope it's not some cheap outfit putting a Denso Label on a sub-par part. Their description makes it sound like Denso is the company that actually performed the rebuild.
Anyone else tried one of these from RockAuto.com? http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...486&cc=1430887
It's only $205 including core, plus shipping.

That is a good price. But just remember it is a rebuilt. There are several things that are only checked and not replaced. So basically this type of product is only repaired of the faulty part which caused the failure. Im sure bearings and things like that are replaced also..but not much more outside of that. It seems legit and for the price I would go for it. But all on the understanding that it is a rebuilt not new. Good luck!
Many of the parts MINI sells are actually rebuilt as well, eg. brake master cylinders for R53's. Several other airline mechanics I work with have used Rock Auto for their vehicles with no bad reports as yet.
Thanks guys. I feel reassured knowing rock auto has a decent reputation. The price just seemed so good, I started thinking there must be a catch.
I did look for a "new" one, but it seems like they're all remanned. A new Bosch might have been an okay choice, but I wanted to stick with what MINI put on it in the first place.

This is what I got and it works for me. And if it really has a lifetime warranty then that's a huge plus!

Hello Fellow Mini owners,
About last year I purchased and 03 Mini Cooper automatic(Ik Ik don't give me **** for it) with 35,000 miles. I am starting to understand the car and identifying the parts and their functions.
I did a routine check on my car and realize I need to replace ...
Brake Rotors
Brakes
Front strut upper mounts
Front shocks and struts
I plan on instating these parts on my own and wanted to get the best , most reliable deal on these parts that total up to $1,400 on some websites. Hope some Mini Cooper veterans can help me out. Thanks.

Think you did fine!!!
Have bought many parts on rock auto...
All DENSO parts for a Toyota.... O2 sensors, and coils.....all were perfect, and a fraction of the dealer pricing....as a matter of fact...cheaper than "lifetime" junk auto-zone was selling that (in the case of my coils) failed multiple times...and was replaced with rockauto parts....
The fact the info page has DENSO on it...as opposed to just a rebuilt DENSO by Bosch, etc means you are good IMO.
