Correct oil filter

Hello,

I previously changed my oil getting a filter from a well-known Mini parts vendor. This time I bought my filter off Amazon Mann HU 816/2X. I don't have the box from my previous filter, but when looking at it, it's bit different than my new one. There's not a rubberized end like my new one and the center hole is a fair bit bigger. I'm wondering if the old one was incorrect. It was the same length, hopefully it filtered just as well.

I seem to have lost the pictures when I tried to paste some info for you

Look at the 12th post in this thread from Braminator.

I don't have the spring or the cage. Mini Mania sell the entire later style filter housing, but it's almost $300. Is there any chance I could just get a spring and a cage? I'm pretty sure I have the early style housing, but I guess I better double check. My car is an '03 R53. Also from the picture on Mini Mania's site it looks like the HU816/2X oil filter that I bought it for the later style housing.

That is the right one for a 2003 R53.

you should have just made one thread with all your questions, but its ok!

Mann filters are oem and stick with them!

and any full synthetic 5w-30 you want.

i use Mobil, or castrol or pennzoil depending on who is the cheapest at the time of purchase.

This has been discussed in countless threads since 2002.

It's personal preferance really...

I used to run Mobil 1 0w-40 in all of my MINI's, just recently switched to Amsoil 5w-40 European Formula, and liking it a lot so far

Read up on oil specs and make your own informed choice!

I used pezzoil last time and around 2300 miles my car needed oil. I drive my car pretty hard sometimes, is this typical for minis?

I check my oil about every other time I get gas. Yes, MINI's tend to use oil.

I always have an extra quart in my trunk.

Do NOT cheap out on filters. It's not the filter that will get you, its the O ring. I bought a bunch of filters from Advance Auto because I had a $50 coupon. The first time the o ring failed and dumped oil RIGHT BEFORE going out on VIR (if someone had not seen it I'm sure I would have dumped all my oil and blown up the engine before noticing the immediate drop of oil pressure) I thought was my mistake, the second time it happened immediately after changing on my street mini I figured out it wan't me.

We only recommend use the OEM MINI oil filters, and yes you need full synthetic oil. Picking brands on oil is like picking coke or pepsi so go with what you believe.

Mann is one of the OEM supplies of filters to MINI. I've had no problems with them, they are a good product.

+1
That's what I use....can usually get then in a 5 or 6 pack for a deal.
Just a reminder..ALWAYS LUBE the O-ring when you install a new one...even the the pro's will occasionally find one tears on install...SO ALWAYS DO A LEAK CHECK...the look after a few miles just to be 100% sure!
