R50/53 Coolant smell
Coolant smell
Hi guys,
I searched but couldn't find it, so I need you guys opinions.
I have cooper S with Cosworth head and pully,...things.
When I push car hard(like I usually shift 3000 RPM but hold like 5000 RPM), then sometimes I can smell coolant, but when I check there is no coolant leak and level is ok.
What do you guys think? is it possible small drop inside or from other car or,...
It makes me little bit worry and don't want to push it hard because of it.
Thanks.

check the heat exchanger in the cabin.. have you ever changed that? i have already gone through 2 on my 2003.. its in the bottom of the center console and easy to get to - panel by your right leg.. warm piece of plastic.. you can disconnect\drain\replace in under 30mins.

Just a reminder....
FLUSHING and changing the coolant on a mini is a regular (every 3-4 year) thing too do...
Waiting too long results in corrosion/blockage of different parts....the heater core is the lowest point in the cooling system...so it tends to get plugged.
My suggestion.....
First step...
Reach down...feel the carpet...any unusual wetness? Any extra fogging of you windows lately?
Inspecting for leaks down around the heater core is a good start....but the smell might be wafting into the car..other common leaks are the expansion tank (cracks/leaks along the seam).....or the thermostat gasket....
But look around...be a detective... Look for dried coolant stains...even the radiator and the hoses are suspect as the car ages....
One other thing to consider.... The cap on the expansion tank is a pressure relief valve...so if pressure builds up...from overfilling, a slightly leaking head gasket , or just bad cap will let a bit out...
If you don't see anything obvious.... Just check the coolant level on a regular basis.... And wait as the issue becomes worse, making it simpler to trackdown!!

I check the heater core part, all 2 connection was clean and plastic out case was clean also. and there is no coolant drop not leak. Very clean.
But still, sometimes, I smell sweet coolant smell.
I just checked expansion tank and no level change that mean no leak, I guess.
