hey man, question for you....
would you trade your 04' MCS for a 05' auto MCS if it was a even trade?

Hmmmm.....

Depends. I have really come to enjoy the sleek 6-speed in my '04 MCS and it really adds to the performance and fun persona of the car.

The '05 MCS sounds tempting and interesting but I am not holding it to a very high expectation just because MINI this time around has gone with a regular Hydraulically operated slushbox = More weight, reduced fuel economy and performance. I think they should have stuck to the CVT which appears to be capable of handling in excess of 200HP (Based on internal ZF documents).

I'll reserve judgment until I get to drive one. For now I think the MCS is best enjoyed with a manual.

If you are going to order a '05 MCS 6-speed you should consider adding the LSD as well.

'05 MCS Automatics will not offer LSD, only manual models.

Good question. I've been wondering about that.

You said it all Cooper4us,

That regular automatic transmission will weigh more than the CVT, which is actually quite light for an automatic, still heavier than the manual, but by only 50 lbs or so, whereas a regular automatic my guess will weight another 50 lbs more than the CVT. That added to the already higher weight of the supercharged MINI over the MC means what, maybe an extra 150 lbs or more, maybe 200 lbs. Sure the supercharged car will still be faster, but that extra weight will stymy handling and braking somewhat. I'd like to drive it though and see how it does.

I really like the smoothness of my CVT. If this new auto MINI was available when I bought my CVT MINI 6 months ago, I might have gotten it, instead, as I wanted an S, but cannot shift too much with my bad knees. Small engines do well with a CVT, though -- much quiter and smoother. I'll be thinking about this.

If it was an even trade I might consider it. If I traded in my MC I'd probably get another MC as I don't really think you get 3 grand worth of extra performance from the S. Don't tell MINI marketing I said that though.

And the auto tranny would not really factor into it. I only got the CVT for the benefit of my wife but I am glad to have it. I would enjoy a MINI either way.

Hey am I reading this right?! They are actually making an AUTOMATIC Mini Cooper S in 2005? Any word on who is the transmission manufacturer and/or if it is currently being used in some other car? Or is it going to be a MINI exclusive?

Thanks and rock on,

-MB

I'm just gonna take a SWAG here and guess that perhaps the new automatic coming in the '05 MCS is also going to appear in the 1-series BMW's... now, this is totally and completely a guess, but I'll bet it's a pretty good one...

BMW Series 1 is a RWD car and MINI a FWD'er, so 2 very different transmissions I am afraid.

It is likely that the new '05 MCS slushbox will either be manufactured by ZF (Which currently makes the CVT Cooper box) or GM (Which has been supplying auto trannys for BMW for several years).

The '05 MCS auto will have Tiptronic steering wheel mounted shift paddles

My only big dissapointment here is it seems to me that BMW has reached "the end of the line" in regards to further development of the CVT transmission for higher powered MINI models. Also where is the long awaited SMG gearbox? Why a slushbox with Tiptronic paddles instead?

actually the SMG prices have come down dramatically on BMWs - and it's offered on every model now (except SUVs). That being said it won't be something we'll see on the MINI for some time most likely.

I wasn't aware they offered it on every model...I know the 545i has it as well...How come they wouldn't throw it on an MCS? I'm sure that would definitely push some over the line who were debating as to go that route.....

It's a $1500 option on everything from the 3 series, to the 7 series. It will be available on the 1 series as well.

Even the 7 series? Wow. Would be very interesting to drive one(any SMG tranny). I test drove an RX-8 with the auto tranny and paddle shifters, and found it very intuitive to use.

Will the auto MCS carry a similar premium as the CVT MC did?

Oops scratch that. I meant 3 to 6 series. The 7 doesn't have a true SMG but a manually operated auto.

i wonder if there would be quite the hostility towards "auto" drivers if it was SMG!

Would the current SMG trans even be able to mount up to a FWD motor? I don't much about the differences between FWD and RWD transmissions, but I was under the impression they are not alike.
