R50/53 Yet another bike rack question!
The Q clips will leave a slight impression in the gutter. Most of the people I've spoken to have that.

I am not sure I agree with that. I have had mine on and off at least 10 times and I have no marks at all.

What scares me about the Yakima though is THULE won't even attempt to put out a roof rack for the mini based on the fact that the plastic gutters are fragile.
Either they are too lazy to engineer something that works or they know somethign that Yakima doesn't/refuses to know.

You must be one of the lucky ones
Even the Yakima instructions have a disclaimer that the rack may deform the gutter slightly.
I guess that's the reason the factory rack supports 100 more pounds than the factory one.
All in all, I am still a big fan of my Yak.

I would feel lucky if my car started the 1st time in the morning

I've got MINI's roof bolted rack system and I love it. They now have fork mount trays that are very slick. $125 for each tray. Lockable and adjeustable on the inside of the lever system. (looks like an aligator mouth.)
If you do the math, the factory roof rack with Thule fork mount
rails ends up being the most expensive way to go..Once you add
the installation cost, plus the worry about the install with the headliner
needing to be removed and holes being drilled in the roof. The drip
rail method of attachment has always left me being worried about
loosing the whole thing. I went with the Sport-Link factory bike rack.
Very solid, comes off in seconds, less wind drag/noise.
Just a thought..
