R50/53 Crankshaft removal? Anyone?
Crankshaft removal? Anyone?
Hi Guys,
So, i heard a couple months ago a scary *** noise.. took the mini to BMW. BMW says its conrod bearing.
So, i took the car apart, took the engine out, took the engine apart. Only harmonic dampener, crankshaft and pistons+rods left on the engine. I cannot find a manual anywhere on how to get the crankshaft out.
Basically here are the things i am trying to find out:
How do i get the crank out?
Bolts... do i need new bolts for everything in the crank case once i remove them?
Torque specs for said bolts?
I'm really at a loss here, bentley book doesn't even have crank removal.

You need to remove the bed plate. For a more complete shop manual buy a 2003 to 2005 Dodge Neon factory shop manual and read the 1.6 liter engine section. There will be lots of explanations that are not present in the Bentley Mini manual. Chrysler designed and
built the 1st generation Mini engine for BMW.
built the 1st generation Mini engine for BMW.
The 2.0 Neon engine design is not identical in that it uses a belt driven camshaft not the Mini's chain drive. Both engines use bedplates to secure the crankshaft main bearings, however there are many different design details.
I have worked on and own both types ( 06 Cooper and 04 MCS ;9 2003 and 2004 SRT4).
I wish i had access to TIS. Jamez, is it possible for you to tell me if the bed pan and conrod bolts need to be replaced, and their torque specs?

Inspect the bolts. If they have a thinner area between the head and the thread - replace. If they are even full diameter then they are probably re-useable. cannot assist with torque - sorry.
