Where to get CV joint / axle assembly?

I'm in the middle of a suspension rebuild and I did a number on the threads on the outer CV joint while trying to break it free from the hub. So, it looks like I'll need a new CV joint or entire axle assembly. Any suggestions on where to get one? The only ones I can find online are the $500 OEM axles or the $50 el-cheapo rebuilt ones. Is there any OEM quality parts that don't cost an arm and a leg? I used to be able to buy brand new GKN axles at a reasonable price for my VWs, but can't find one for the MCS.

Of those whom I have heard used non-OEM ( ebay, ect) they didn't last long maybe a year or so. In some cases where the MINI was lowered. they failed as soon as 3 months....You'll need tranny fluid to top off too.

Found this....http://www.ebay.com/itm/PAIR-NEW-COMPLETE-FRONT-RIGHT-LEFT-CV-DRIVESHAFT-ASSEMBLY-MINI-COOPER-S-/290702607232?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3ACooper&hash=item43af39c380&vxp=mtr
If you go this route, at least pick up new OEM output shaft seal....

Thanks for your help.

I was able to find a GKN CV joint (not the whole axle) at partsgeek for less than $100. I've had really good luck with them in the past. Since I have the 200 HP JCW and I'm installing H-sport springs, the risk of using low price/quality parts is just too high.

Also, just ordered some trans fluid. It's about time for a change anyway.

One last question; how easy is it to pull the axle from the trans? Do I need a slide hammer or can I just pull it by hand?

Thanks!

Axle and bearing assembly should come out aok by hand.

What are the conditions of the inner and outer boots ? The MINI boot kits come complete with grease if the boots are old/leaking.

Just use a large screwdriver or small prybar up at the trans. housing where the axle slides in, actually takes minimal force.

Try the Driveshaft Shop. Nice product and I found mine from a vendor on eBay that was cheaper than direct.
