My new S just rolled off the truck tonight, but I can't drive it. I mean, I can drive it but I can't DRIVE it! No wot, revs under 4500! This is torture!! I want to take it out and just flog it ruthlessly, but I can't! It's just inhumane!

Seriously, this is worse than the wait for delivery because the car is here and I can't DRIVE it. Luckily I'm going to be putting close to 80 miles/day on it, so it will go relatively quickly.

Any tips for surviving this living hell?

1400 miles at 70mph is only 20 hours of driving. Get off the computer and get to work!

The weather has been so nice up here in the Pacific NW. Take a trip up here; by the time you get back, the car should be ready for you to DRIVE.

Once I reached about 500 miles, I slowly started increasing my flogging and I think my MINI is stronger for it.

An occasional WOT after a few hundred miles wont really harm anything.

It won't be long before 1200 miles fly by. A few long trips will be helpful. Varried driving with some cooling off works.

Go for the gusto. Press on till you reach your goal. Then the real FUN begins

4400 RPM in 6th gear is 115 mph............Think you can handle that?Just remember(at least in MY state) 20 mph over the speed limit is driving to endanger and punishable by up to 6 months in jail Also remember, you are no longer unobtrusive! and the cops out there seem to live to pull us in.This site is LOADED with testimonials to this.Motor safely on......

I would guess a lot of road trips might help -- if you can! I am dreading the break in period as well!!!

True, but I went with as unobtrusive color sheme as possible, DS/DS. My IB/W Cooper really stood out, but this car "blends" a bit better. Of course I'll be less unobtrusive when I slap on some honkin' big driving lights!!

If you don't like the break in period, no one is going to hold you to it. I mean, really, if this break-in period was so important, they would have coded it into the ECU so you couldn't go above 4.5k and exceed the speed during the break in period right?

consider the break in period...a rite of passage...
it's a cumbersome process...but worth the time and effort to assure... peace o mind..
or
u can drive at 110 MPH....

two extremes... both valid...rofl

I thought the rite of passage was chewing off your fingernails waiting for your baby to come in!

I hadn't even thought about how bad the wait will be until I can really DRIVE!

The paranoid part of me that likes to come up with conspiracy theories tells me that MINI tells us to go easy during the break in period so that they will be able to more inexpensively repair initial build problems that show up within the first 1000 miles. If the engine blows up at redline, it will cost them more than if it starts to do something funny early on at lower rpm's

Of course that is the same part of me that wonders if the gas station actually sells premium gas? Especially at the stations where all grades of fuel come out of the same nozzle! I wonder what the volume of low grade gasoline from the last guy is left in the hose before my premium makes it to the tank?

I "accidentially" hit WOT leaving the driveway of the dealership!
I stopped bothering with the break-in guidelines after a few hundred miles. After that long, the engine is already 95% broken-in, most likely.

But I'm paranoid that a dealer will be able to detect if I've "violated" the break in guidelines. Is that kind of historical data logged?
