R50/53 Break in period SUCKS!!

I've had my ECU unplugged tons of times, reset the software even more, reflashed many times, and replaced once! I can't imagine the data logger is anything besides the adaptive logic memory bank. Since I've deleted mine countless times, I seriously doubt there's any data from the "break-in" mileage. I can't see a reason for the computer to database your entire cars history; I'd guess it only keeps the last few hundred miles at most.
Furthermore, BMW tried to push this "you didn't follow the break-in procedure" with the E46 //M3 engine-go-boom fiasco. long story short; BMW lost.
The most critical period for engine break-in is the mileage you don't drive it. Seriously, we all get our cars with about 10 miles on them. Those first miles are the most important for break-in. The majority of the "seating" occurs during this period. After those 10 miles, then it's just wearing in the engine based on the seating that's already occurred. The next 100 miles are the next most important. After that, it's sharply downhill on the importance of "proper break-in". What the engine is built for plays a big role on the best way to break it in. Racing engines have a starkly different break-in routine than normal passenger car engines. Basically, the bottom line with passenger car stuff is you don't want to "shock" the components when they're still fresh off the line, hence the break-in guidelines generally saying "take it easy for a bit".

...But I'm paranoid that a dealer will be able to detect if I've "violated" the break in guidelines. Is that kind of historical data logged?

I'm around 400Mi now, the first 250 I drove very easy and carefully. Until 1,250 I'm avoiding WOT and above 5,000... Otherwise, I'm drivein like I normally drive... Normally quick, but not at the edge (Well, at least not @ the edge often
Man, its gonna take me a long time to put 1250 miles on my car. I don't drive it daily, mostly weekends and occasionly on the weekdays, at least night now. It'll be a month before I start driving it a little more than I do now. But like I said before, you can have plenty of fun at 4000 RPM.

Oh, I disagree. These engines really don't do much below 4k, that's where the fun begins.
Combine +4k with WOT, then you've got yourself a party.

>>My new S just rolled off the truck tonight, but I can't drive it. I mean, I can drive it but I can't DRIVE it! No wot, revs under 4500! This is torture!! I want to take it out and just flog it ruthlessly, but I can't! It's just inhumane!

>>Seriously, this is worse than the wait for delivery because the car is here and I can't DRIVE it. Luckily I'm going to be putting close to 80 miles/day on it, so it will go relatively quickly.

>>Any tips for surviving this living hell?
Here is a tip: You can still STEER it. That should amuse you for a while.

XAlfa.....someone watching me autocross told me PKT RKT sounded awesome (what with a helmet on and trying not to hit cones, it's tough to listen to your exhaust...) but you are correct these babies sound tremendous when you wind them up......and they, er, move.......yes, I know, us dummies wasted our money and could have done it cheaper, better and on and on....but man, this is one sweet car. If it wasn't for the fact that the color knocks off about 10 MPH of the top end, I'd be really happy.......
I've been desensitizing myself in preparation for break-in hell (our IB/W MCS arrives NEXT SATURDAY!!!) by driving our CRV under 4k rpm since last year...
p.s. Wish a programmable ECU was available for the Mini like the one my brother-in-law has for his WRX... very cool, simple, can match to the exact octane, change easily from factory to economy to performance... even has a valet program keeping the rpm's low - I call it the "teen-aged son" program
