R50/53 recommended supercharger pully upgrade
recommended supercharger pully upgrade
hi im new here and around minis this is my first one its a 2005 chili red six speed im think of doin the reduction pully but not sure which one to go with any ideas or recommendations i like to high way pulls if that helps?
Congrats on the MINI - you chose a great vintage (R53), and I'm sure you'll enjoy the hell out of it.
You'll typically find the reduced pulleys in three sizes: 15%, 17%, or 19% reduction. It's my understanding that the smaller pulleys (19%) cause more heat and can put more stress on the supercharger, therefore potentially shortening its life.
I'm lucky enough to live near a seasoned, experienced independent MINI mechanic. When I was ready to upgrade mine, he recommended the 15%. His reasoning: it gives a good power boost, you can rev to the redline, any additional stress or wear on the SC is negligible.
There are a number of different vendors; I got my kit from Way Motor Works. They offer a package that includes the reduced pulley (you pick the size), a new SC belt, tensioner, and colder spark plugs. WMW is very respected among the MINIacs, so you could probably even ask them what the pros & cons are of each size.
My $0.02: in addition to the pulley, consider getting a cold air intake as well. You'll get a great sound, and your car will breathe better too.
As with the pulley, there are many vendors but I chose DDMWorks and could not be happier.
Good luck, and let us know which way you go and how you like the end results.

I agree! I have had a15% pulley on my R53 since 2006! Works great and the mileage does not go down until I stomp on the gas!!!! Enjoy!
