Radiator Fan Problems

I have a 2004 Cooper S with 80,000 miles I bought used. The air compressor stopped working right before the winter 2011. I didn't replace it until about 3 weeks ago because summer was getting here in Alabama. The compressor was replaced by a local shop and finally blows COLD air. However, the radiator fan will come on for a few seconds and shut off, come back on for a few seconds and shut off. Will continue this as long as the air compressor is on. There really isn't any regular intervals to it. Mostly happens or seems to happen when at idle. I can't for the life of me remember if it did this before since I haven't had air for a while. Can someone give me any advise or suggestions if this normal. Thanks.

Start the car. Turn on the AC. Go watch the fan. If it's not staying on consistently (i.e. it's cycling) then your low-speed fan resistor is dead. Tons of info here on the forum.

You can replace the resistor for $55-ish, or replace the whole fan for $75-ish.

It is cycling but it seems to frequent of a cycle. It will come on for 2-3 seconds and turn off and than come back on for the same amount of time. I just couldn't remember since it was so long ago that I had the air condition on. Thanks

If it's cycling at all, then your toast.

Here are your options:

http://www.detroittuned.com/shop/?productID=530

Or get a new fan. I got mine from RockAuto.com - cheap enough, and not too bad to replace yourself if you're handy.
