Strange steering problems (Steering gets hard at a certain point turning left or righ

Hi guys,

I just replaced my power steering pump 4 months ago. Right now, the power steering pump works and so does the fan.

Problem:

While I'm turning in either direction, the steering gets to a point where it gets hard and then comes back to normal, both directions.

Example: If I turn either way (right or left) the steering gets hard at the same point in both directions, lets say at half a turn of the steering wheel. If I leave the steering wheel at half turn left or right, it won't return to center.

Can anybody help me diagnose this? Has anybody had this problem before.

I have the same problem. I've read that it's possibly the lower universal joint on the steering shaft. It's exposed to the elements. I also read that cleaning this well will give a temporary fix. I might get at that today. I'll let you know how it goes.

That lower u-joint can definitely be a problem. I spray mine with lubricant a couple times a year.

Last time I checked the lower steering shaft wasn't even available, but hopefully they have them in stock again. Don't think I'm going to buy one though since it's not really that big of a deal to just lube it up every once in a while

Yup, the problem suddenly went away. I sprayed some lubricant in the u-joint to take care of it. I'm actually thinking of putting some grease in the u-joint to prevent it from happening again.

Great! Same here. I just was just about to post the same thing. Works perfect again. I'll get some grease over the whole thing to make it last a bit longer when I get a chance

Its the U joint at the bottom, the spray will work for a while, did mine also , then it came back.
