First replace the antenna, see if the previous owner still has the OEM one, stubby's don't really work that well at a distance, usually the signal will just drop wirh one as opposed to fading away.
I just changed out the stock antenna, my reception is great, a little better than the stock. I put the craven speed stubby on it, but I do live in Houston. Sounds like the connector could be loose as said, you may also want to check the antenna itself to see if it is corroded on the treads or so (never know- easy check).
In my experience with other makes, sorry have not had the issue with mine, the connections are loose on the radio. I have not pulled mine yet, no need to, so I am not sure of the set up. Most antenna connectors have 2 wires and a pretty solid connector. Make sure it is not loose (as said above) and also check on the install for the iPod device and see what they tapped into. My experience in the shop was a shoddy install, the devices will still work but other systems are compromised.
I did not find anything on that brand, but I did find some reference material on the factory iPod adapter. Part # 100-274 on Moss Mini.

Hopefully, it is not the audio unit itself, or the upper mount that the antenna screws into. If you get down to nothing obvious, you may want to check the continuity for the antenna circuit from the audio unit to the antenna, an extra hand will be helpful. Would recommend a wiring diagram to just make sure what is all on the circuit. As I said, I have not had any issues with mine so I am just guessing a basic circuit. I am not sure, but it may route to the amp from the audio unit, then go to the antenna. I had an issue with my volume lowering on a turn, which I found was the wiring to the amp was moving. Note: Do not store an ice scraper next to the amp, it does slide and hit wires. Make sure the previous owner does not have anything stored there, easy check also. My 2006 has the Harmon Kardon, my amp is located in the right rear behind the plastic panel door. Open the hatch, can't miss it.
Hope this helps some, sorry I do not have more knowledge on the Mini specifically, all cars are pretty much the same though.
Good luck!

The roof antenna is not needed for FM it has an antenna built into the back window for that. If you have NO radio (am or fm) your antenna lead probably came off. in AM do you have any static? or is it completely silent?

The hardtop has FM antennas on both the roof and back window, and a diversity circuit that chooses between the two for best signal (which is usually from the roof).
Thank you all-
Cleaned up antenna - a lil corroded , and opend up and pulled head to find antenna wire off and easy fix. Also cleaned up the Dice Integration wires that almost tore off when i went to open up the the drivers side dash lower panel to remove stereo - sloppy
Nice and neat now
Then treated myself to a nice 2 hr NY thruway drive to Jersey and oh so enjoyed the ride!!!
