EML light with no other warning lights (and no "limp mode")

I posted this in the "Stock Problems" sub forum, but thought I'd re-post here since there's more traffic (and this forum appears to be used for troubleshooting as well).

My wife's 2006 'S' is giving her an EML light on the dash about once a week, with no other symptoms or warning indicators. If she turns the car off and back on, the light clears and stays off. The OBD system isn't reporting/storing any codes, and the car never goes into the reduced-power "limp mode".

I've found a lot of threads here that discuss the EML light in conjunction with other warnings, but none (that I've found) where the EML light is the only indication of a problem.

Does this point to one particular component as the likely culprit? From what I can find out, "EML" just refers to BMWs "drive by wire" system, but I couldn't find anything specific about what the EML light actually *means*.

I am having the same problem my light randomly comes on and no codes so my dealer cant figure out what is causing it. Also i have a terrible hesitation between 2-3k rpm and when im at full throttle. is any of the hesitation familiar to you or just the light.

No, she only ever got the light - no other symptoms. And she hasn't even gotten the light in a few months now, so I'm writing it off as a random gremlin.

Plug a code reader into it. An intermittent light light that is most likely evap or EGR.

Did you ever find the culprit for your EML issue?
I took mine to a local shop and they informed me it was the boots for the supercharger.
They replaced those and the intake(without my input) and away I went. 5 days later it came back on😡

No, she never got any other lights along with the EML, and there were never any codes stored when I plugged in a reader. After a while, she just stopped getting the EML light.
