R50/53 At how many miles did you have to replace the stock clutch in your R53?
At how many miles did you have to replace the stock clutch in your R53?
Just wondering what kind of life most people are getting from the stock R53 clutches. I know that some guys manage to burn them up in under 20,000 miles...but I'm sure that's the exception not the rule. For those of you who don't always drive your mini like you stole it....when did you have to replace your clutch?.....or are you still running around with the stocker?
Anyone out there with over 100,000 miles and a stock clutch? 150,000 miles?
Just wondering...Thanks!

R52 - Dealer replaced original clutch disk, pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bearing at 110,000 miles - $2,110. I took it in because the throwout bearing squalled after a start-up and was chirping every time i pressed the clutch pedal. Had to nurse it the 280+ miles to the dealer. Made it OK.
Still going strong after 80k miles on the stock clutch in 2006 R52 'S', and about 60k on my wife's 2006 R52 'S'. Both cars have some autocross events on them, but no extreme driving other than that.
72K and still going strong...knock wood.

My throwout bearing went bad at 32,000. I had a performance clutch for 8,000 miles and then it melted. A stock clutch was put back on, so that is 47,000 on this OEM clutch.
Buddy of mine just told me tonight that his clutch let go earlier today on his 2002 Justa at just over 68k miles. :(
I have just about same mileage on my 2002 MCS and clutch is still strong

I wonder why there is such a variance? Some people have theirs go out under 60,000 miles....some guys are well over 100,000 miles. I'm assuming that it all has to do with how you drive it.
That's pretty much it - how often you shift, and how good your technique is when you do shift. I've gone 400 miles on the highway without touching the shifter once, and I've also slogged through stop-and-go traffic where I've probably shifted 400 times in a mile or two.
When pulling away from a traffic light, I'm completely off the clutch pedal by about 1800 RPM or so, but I've seen people that take off at about 3000 RPM and just feather the clutch all the way through first gear until it's time to shift into second. Those are the people that aren't getting 100k on a clutch.
I'm the 3rd owner, got the car with 46k miles on it. Most of my motoring is on rural roads with occasional stop & go city driving. Don't know about the first 2 owners, but I think that at least one of them really pounded on the MC.
The original clutch in my 2004 MCS lasted 153,000.
Replaced with Clutch Masters FX200 which lasted 15,000.
Went back to stock clutch.
That one lasted 60K then failed.
Car is in shop now getting a new clutch and LSD installed.

When I decided to get Otto (2005 MCS) I knew I would have to finally (in my mid 30s) learn how to drive a manual. I got him at 40 k and at 50 k the stock clutch still feels great. I had to replace the slave cylinder twice, but that's another thread....
i love my otto
