2006 JCW Camshaft Position Sensor

Hey All,

So my car threw a check engine light today. The code is for a Camshaft Position Sensor. It looks like the part is around 120$. I am not sure how to find where this part is in the engine. I did some searching around on the forums and did not find a DIY guide. Has anyone changed this part in their car. Can I still drive the car with this sensor having issues? Any guidance that you all can offer would be great.

The camshaft sensor is at the front of the engine, in the end of the cylinder head. If you're looking at the engine its on the far left next to the bracket the goes over the engine mount. Its not that hard to change out really. Put a Jack stand under the engine, remove the support bracket at the front of the engine and replace the sensor.

Sensor replaced and still having the same code.. The code reads Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit. So I assume that I could be an issue in the Sensor, Wiring, or PCM/ECU Any thoughts on where to start and how to troubleshoot this further?

Did you clear the codes? The only time I have gotten this code is when my timing was off. Once I had the timing issue fixed the code remained till cleared.

no,

Crank sensor is on the front of the block which monitors the crank position

the cam position sensor is on the cylinder head and monitors the cam position.

the problem with the coding system through the obdII it will tell you the cam sensor is bad when it's actually the crank position sensor

Well that is good to know. Something I will have to keep in mind since my Mini seems to have anything possible break on it.

Short story first, was chasing the cause of a slight misfire/ jump in 3rd while accelerating hard, no warning lights. Found a cracked CAM sensor, replaced and still didn't fix it.. Around a month after changing the CAM an engine warning light P0341 came on, checked voltages (OK), wires (OK) for CAM sensor even wiggled them to check for breaks. Left me with timing, changed the chain, CAM sprocket, tensioner and timed it up, wiped the codes, cycled ignition, all ok. On reflection, the chain was less than 0.5mm stretched, and I didn't check if the timing was off before removing the old chain, should have only changed the tensioner first to see if that was the cause.
