R50/53 Thinking about a 2005 Cooper S "6-speed" manual
I recommend you start out by perusing this handy reference:

Many folks consider the '05-'06 MCS to be the "cream of the crop" as far as the BMW MINI goes. Good luck with your research!

Don't be scared off by one horror story. Consult the above buyers guide, have the car looked at by a MINI mechanic. The 05/06 S is regarded as one of the more robust, desirable models. You will love the car. Good luck!

I don't work for BMW or anyone else related to the industry, and my only personal experience is with my own 2006 Non-S. However, I know there are a ton of members on here with solid R53s without failed transmissions. I'm not denying there are problems and I did suggest that the OP have the potential purchase be inspected by a qualified mechanic, which is ALWAYS advisable when looking at a used car.
Frankly I take any ranting and raving from someone with single digit post counts with a grain of salt. Obviously you have had a bad experience and I am sorry that you got a lemon. However, trashing an entire generation of cars based on that is ridiculous. Second generations are not without their issues either.
If you need solid reliability, consider a 2006 Cooper Non-S, they are known to be quite reliable. If you need bulletproof, get a Honda.
As for your link, none of the S models have the CVT transmission, which is prone to failure. All first gen auto Non S have the CVT, and yes, by all accounts they are a ticking time bomb.

The 05/06 MCS 6 speeds were the cream of the crop.
Ratios were changed and made the transmission even better.
It is a Getrag.
How may miles on car?
OEM clutch usually good for 100K or more.
Idiot comparing auto to manual is an idiot.
2 different animals.
