R50/53 Maximum milage per day on a new car?
First of all, Happy 2004 to all MINI enthusiasts!
I'll be picking up my MCS soon and driving it cross country. Because of time shortage, I probably have to dive 800-1000 miles a day. Is that harmful to a new car???

I would just remember to vary your speeds, stay within 4,250 rpms, etc as recommended in the break-in procedures. These cars are so fun to drive I'm sure you'll rack up the miles and not even realize you're almost home. Safe travels!

I agree. As long as it is running at correct operating temperatures, has correct level of oil, and you follow the advice above, your new car will be fine.
I had an uncle who would "rest" a car after a couple of hours. As a kid, I always wondered how a machine knew this!

I don't see a problem and you'll finish break-in in record time. Normally we think of the first 300 miles for break in of the tires, clutch and brakes as well so just go easy since you will be getting highway miles quickly.
I'd recommend some regular stops in the first 1200 miles to let the engine cool down a bit- open the bonnet for a few minutes and stretch your legs. It's a good time to clean off the bugs. Yuk.
Drive safely and enjoy the ride. Have a Happy New year.

NSX13 hit the nail on the head when he said "vary your speeds". You shouldn't drive at a constant speed for long durations during breakin. I forget what the term is for it, but the variation is needed to bed the rings properly.

one thing i would do if i was driving a new car cross country, is schedule an oil change with a dealer about 1k miles from where i started. i'll be changing the oil in our car after it's first 500-1000 miles.

Is it really neccessary to change oil after 500-1000 miles? I thought the first oil change is not due till 5000. ???

1600 miles in one day or 24 hours is roughly 66.666 mph averaged.
If you stop to use the bathroom once every 4 hours and set the land speed record for finding/entering/using a non occupied stall/exiting and jumping back in your car then you might get close if you only drive on freeways that allow 70 mph speed limits (no speed traps please). Also you'll need to pack all snacks and drinks so no stops are needed to replenish your supplies.
Now if your one day allowed for a few extra hours of driving then it might be realistic to drive greater than 1500 miles and not have to trip over the curb as you run for the bathroom at a stop you have never seen before yelling "get out of the way- I'm setting a record for NAM!!!"

If the car is operating at it's correct operating range, why would you stop it to cool down? Just when you got all the bits wearing in at the righ temperarture?
I agree about the cleaning of the bugs part though, but I don't understand the cooling off part,
