I was at my dealership a month ago and heard a story about this guy who had just bought a 2004 MCS. From what I understand, he saw the Italian Job and thought that if he had a Mini like he saw on the silver screen, he could do the same stunts that those vehicles performed.

So the very same week that he took delivery of the MCS, he got his kids in the car and he decided to impress them a bit by driving down a flight of concrete steps. I'm not sure where this occured, but he ended up almost totaling the vehicle. He broke both of the axles, ripped the suspension out of the car, cracked the steering column, set off all airbags (obviously), and other structural damage that I can't remember right now.

When I heard the story, I was floored by this guy's critical thinking skills. The insurance company agreed to pay for the damages. I asked the sales manager what he said to the guy and he said that he just smiled and said that they would do what they could to fix it. You can imagine the laugh the service department had. This has got to go down as one of the Mini Darwin Award Winners (which would probably make for a better thread topic).

Anyone else have any great stories that happened in thier Mini?

First of all, I'm curious as to whether this is a true story. If it is, then his damage is all covered by warranty, right? If not, I can imagine this guy sueing MINI for neglecting to mention in the Driver's Manual that driving down stairs might possibly void the coverage on the suspension of the car. He might also want to try jumping a bus across an incomplete freeway offramp (Speed) to see how well four wheeled public transportation can fly.

Wow that was stupid

When I was at the Nissan dealer a few months back looking at the 350Z the salesman said they let a 16 year old kid drive one for a test drive and he totaled it...I laughed pretty hard when he told me

I sure hope he got in on video. Surely a Kodak moment.

I would think his insurance rates would be superhigh and/or he is looking for another insurance company.
Why doesn't he pack his own chute and do the XXX stunts from high places? He could have done it in a new Porsche.

One of my buddies did the same thing. He bought himself a MINI thinking it would ride like the ones in that movie. I took him up to Latigo Canyon for a quickie. He took a dump after 5 minutes.

I'm anxious to know more about the local MINI clubs in LA.
I heard SCMM is the bomb.

I hate to say that this is a real story. I heard it from the head sales manager, and mentioned it to two guys in service, and they both said it happened. I was floored too. It's hard to believe that someone would actually do something like this with thier brand new car, but I believe the sources.

Outrageous.

What I want to know is how do people like that get their licenses, let alone graduate from high school. They even show in the movie that the cars are altered, what was he thinking?

I think a "thinning of the herd" needs to happen to get a Darwin
