I read about the MINI's "Standing Lamps" when I first got my owners manual in July. They're described on pages 12 & 49. Since I've had Ringo, I've tested them and they work great. They even work with the key removed.

My question is, what are they to be used for? I can understand why a driver would want Follow Me Home Lamps (I've got 'em) and Daytime Driving Lamps (got those, too) but I cannot understand the use for the Standing Lamps? The manual states that they can be used for parking but they only work when the key is in position 0. I'm done with parking when the key is in "0" or it's removed.

Any ideas?

Sure, that works. And I guess I just have to stop being so self conscious about staring at Ringo is different lighting conditions.

But any other ideas?

I don't have the manual with me at the present time, but if the standing lamps refers to the side markers and parking lamps on one side or the other of the car becoming illuminated when the turn signal is raised or lowered. then I think they are meant to be used for parking.

The couple of times I've been in the UK I've noticed that drivers parked along the side of the road leave the cars' parking lights on to insure that other drivers will notice the parked car (or at least I can't think of another reason) - thus the name "parking lights".

Ringo, you may remember as the drummer for the British band, the Beatles. Not the first drummer, but the one who was with them through all the albums. He sang a few songs(Yellow submarine, Octopusses Garden etc.) as well.
Ringo is also appearently the name of Kensmini's cooper, which I would assume is some sort of homage to the original, Ringo Star.

Ocracoke got it right the standing or parking lamps as we call them are used for just that in Europe. Here they are set up so that when you park the road side lamp is illuminated so when it is foggy your car wont be hit. They can usually be changed from side to side (depending on which way your car is parked) by using the directional (turn signal) to light one side or the other when they are turned on. Haven't tried them to see if they work that way on the US spec cars.

MINIs are sooooo cool

IT WORKS! It works on the US MINI's. I just tried it. That is SO COOL

Just put the key in the ignition (don't turn it).
Turn the turn signal to the right side.
Remove the key
Right side lit up

the same holds true for the left.

Thanks guys. I was wondering if anybody had actually read what I'd written: I know how these things work and yes, they do work on US MINIs. What I didn't know was why you'd want them if the first place.

So thanks for the English/Euro info. That use certainly makes sense. In San Francisco, there's enough fog to make this feature more than just an OGF.

Ringo Starr had a classic Mini given to him by Brian Epstein in the 1960s.

Ringo's car is AWESOME -- and closely resembles the Velvet Red that I have on order. Spectacular looking car. Thanks for sharing the pics.
