I've found a company that does club liability insurance. They do many classic car clubs, but they also do new car clubs as well. They're called Hagerty Insurance. I've placed a couple of PDF files onto my site for your perusal. Hagerty's number is 800-922-4050 (I found Bob at x8766 to be very helpful). Their application is a breeze to fill out.
1. Insurance Info
2. Insurance Application

I suggest you get quotes from as many insurance providers that you can, prior to making a choice. Also make sure you understand what each company provides insurance for, as most are slightly different from each other. And as always, consult an attorney to understand your risks and your club's risks and how to best protect them.

Dominic,

I'm going to sticky this post because it's an important topic for club officers to see.

Here's another link to a club insurance company: K & K Insurance 800-348-1839 (motorsports division).

edited: to remove Sneed as they do not do auto clubs

I also just came across this link just now while composing this post: FossilCars.Com classic auto insurance There seems to be a large list of insurance companies. I haven't had a chance to contact many of them myself, other than the ones I listed previous.

I was thinking, maybe this would be a good place to have people tell their insurance stories in regards to finding a proper insurance carrier to properly covers their club:

What are your club requirements? (# events, type of events, # members, etc)
Which insurance company policy suits those needs?
Which insurance companies could not suit those needs and Why?
What was the dollar range of quotes?

I'll go first on my experience. Just got a quote back from Hagerty. It's a very pleasant surprise.

The details on my application are:
* 30 active members (120 total members)
* No racing or timed events to be covered (they do have a spot for listing of racing events)
* monthly club meetings
* cruises/fun-runs thruought the southwestern USA (1-50 people)
* Annual British Vintage Voyage (40-60 people)
* Annual Mini Vacation In Vegas (400 people)
* Monthly car shows (100 people)

The quote came back for under $350.00 per year for a $2 million policy. WhooHooo!!! Don't you wish your car insurance was that low!!

BTW, the Hagerty policy is run thru an "Affinity Group" program which is administered and issued by Seabury and Smith, an organization that deals with thousands of civic and social organizations. That's why they are able to offer such an outstanding value by grouping similar clubs together as as "Affinity Group", but also is less flexible and customizable than a more expensive "solo" commercial policy.

dominicminicoopers,

Thanks for the info. I'm still waiting for my quote back. They said probably under $300.00 for our club.

Another company came back with about $1,500.00 :???:

Will mail Hagerty a check instantly if $350.00 or less.

I think this problem has brought up the possibility of a problem and for a club being able to prevent it for $20.00 per member is a GOOD idea.

All,

I contacted Bob at Hagerty Insurance at 1.800.922.4050, ext. 8729.

I got app off website http://www.hagerty.com and answered question:

1. 50 to 75 members
2, 3, and 4 were no

5. (performance driving or racing activities sponsored by the club) none (as raceways have policies you buy for a day)

6. drives on the back roads - going to breakfast, lunch, dinner etc.

7. month to month get togethers.

Came back with a quote of: " We are able to provide coverage on an annual basis for $237.00. These policies include a $1 million per incident limit with a $2 million aggregate liability and zero deductibles"

They want a check and club roster with addresses.

Sounds resonable to me and I am sending in a check for our club.

Well, there's over 100 sign-ups for the AMVIV, so if we need to be assessed a few bucks to cover one-time insurance premium, I'm sure we would be in unanimous agreement with this. Dominic, can you get some figures and let us know that the deal will be? It shouldn't be a last minute bit of info.

I've tried getting figures for event insurance. Just haven't received any faxes back on it. Over the phone questimates from insurance providers all tend to be in the $1500.00 range for a three day event like this. But I really don't want this thread to be about AMVIV. I want it to be about club insurance.

I'm taking a little bit of a different approach to procurring insurance. I want something that would cover the club and club members during all of thier events thruought the year. This would incude protecting club event organizers (like myself) because I am a member of the club holding the insurance.

Remember, personal auto insurance takes care of your auto. However, it would only cover up to its limits, if a bystander (not affiliated with the club) decided to file a claim against it. However, if the bystander who filed the claim finds out there's an organization behind the event, then he'll try to get as much money out of the members of that organization as possible. If the members have protected their event by organizing thru a corporate entity (many clubs become incorporated for this protection) only the club's assets can be gone after and not any of the individual members. So the members assets cannot be touched if the club incurs debt it cannot pay off, or in this case has a law suit filed against it. Now this is where the members want to protect the corporate entity (thier club) and can do so by having the club purchase liability insurance. This liability insurance can now be used to pay any damages associated with a liability claim. So now the club/corporation can still go on without breaking the bank.

But, as with many things in life, you'll want to consult an attorney to understand your particular situation and how best to protect your interests.
