Cheap way is to get the Peake tool from Moss MINI. It's about $140.

Better way is to get ScanXL Pro and the OBD adapter from http://www.tunertools.com/. It also allows datalogging. It's about $230 for both.

You have the classic warning light trifecta. The most likely cause is a faulty wheel speed sensor. If I was you I'd go to the local dealer & ask for their help. It is possible they may warranty it for you.

If I were getting diagnostic tools I would go with this and the BMW extension. Expensive but it basically let you do everything the dealer can.

Yes, the local dealer said it would be $106 , not warranted, and it will be 2 weeks before I can be squeezed in.

Thanks Mini of Louisville.

As the next closest dealer is in Nashville Tennessee, 3 hours away, I will be spending the couple hundred dollars on software and hardware that will do what the dealer can.

Thanks for the input. I am adding it to the short list of products that will do the same thing.

http://www.bavariantechnic.com/buy.aspx this is the only other one that guarantees they can read the codes. I called and spoke with a tech guy.

The only other one I found is sold here, they have not gotten back in touch with me, as to whether or not it works with the mini.I would need the OBD Link 2.0 and the scan master software for around $210

http://www.scantool.net/

Thanks for all the help. I will be purchasing tomorrow and I will let you all know just how well the stuff I buy works.

Tuner Tools has the Scantool link in the TOC on the left. I went with them because it was Jan's recommendation.

The problem with both the Scan master and ScanXL pro software is there are no enhanced codes available for the mini, only base "P" codes for the power train.

In order to diagnose the wheel speed sensor, the DSC and the ABS I will need the enhanced codes for the mini.

Needless to say there are not very many options out there.

May I suggest following site - bmwecu.org - this is forum where people discuss BMW diagnostics/coding/programming. I myself built a laptop with genuine BMW software which works with most BMW made cars (I believe pre-2008 pre-DCAN). Having three in the garage saved me alot of headache troubleshooting different issues. You do need INPA adapter (about $60 on ebay) and windows laptop with serial port powerful enough to run VMware (serial port need to be a real one in order for INPA interface to work)

I live in Lexington and I found a place called Motorsports of Lexington that can do anything a dealer can do and they are about half the price. Also, my recommendation for a code reader/clearer is Innovate Motorsports OT-2. I haven't got one yet but I'm planning on getting one soon.

Here's a link to Motorsports of Lexington on bimmershops.com I talked to one of the techs there, I think his name was Allen but I'm not sure. He seemed really cool. Definitely where I'm gonna start taking my Mini. The Louisville dealership is really expensive. http://www.bimmershops.com/kentucky/...s-of-lexington

Got the Bavarian Technic software and cable.

Worked great, found 2 faults.

5E5C - RPA Push Button error
5D90 - Wheel speed sensor front left electrical failure

Now to the fun part,

Thanks for the help. I will check out the shop in Lexington.

I was wondering if you have, or were able to find, a user guide for the BMW software?

The poster you are responding to has not been on NAM in over 4 years. Take the time to check that before you necro a 6 year old thread.

I know this thread is dead, but I now prefer the Creator C310 code reader. Works on all BMW products from 1998 to 2013, as well as most 1st-Gen and 2nd-Gen MINIs. Even clears out the airbag code. I provided this link because it's $63, the cheapest of the links on Amazon as of today. You can read other linked items if you want to see more reviews. My personal opinion is those that complain don't know what they are doing with the tool.
Amazon.com: Creator C310 V5.1 for BMW Code Reader with Clear Adaptation and Engine Oil Reset Function: Automotive Amazon.com: Creator C310 V5.1 for BMW Code Reader with Clear Adaptation and Engine Oil Reset Function: Automotive

Thanks for the link to the creator reader. There's so many choices out there it's kind of confusing to know which one actually works with our cars. Only $63 too.

Would this one be suitable for my 2012 Cooper Hardtop, to do everything including registering a new battery?

Anyone have any luck with the latest version of Carly for BMW? I use it on my E90 and E82 and it works great but it needs their OBDII reader to work on an R53 and I'm using a different one.
