I have a 2006 R50 Cooper with an automatic transmission. I've been reading about how unreliable the CVT transmissions are. Are all automatic 2006 Coopers equipped with a CVT?
The reason I ask is because shifting is not exactly smooth, especially when around 9 mph in stop-and-go traffic and those transmissions are advertised as smooth. It also has the ability to go into manual mode or, um, fully automatic mode although I've never tried that capability. Is mine a CVT? How can I find out?
I have an '03 Cooper CVT [9/02 build, with 42k], and, knock on wood, have never had any problems with it other than it having a fluid leak [found to have been done at the factory...bent pan lip]. It was a daily driver til '06 [when I bought my MCSa], and it had been to the Dragon as well as to a few HPDEs with Phil Wicks. I still drive it, but mostly to car shows. The MCSa has taken over the daily driving and HPDE duties, now.
Is this true and if so, when replacing a tranny in an older model is there a way to replace with one of these?
Who know on that but you will still be spending close to $9000 to do the replacement.
Also Without having much of a description of the "shifting" of your CVT you might be on your way to a MAJOR repair bill. Good luck and best Advice GET RID OF IT.
