My fan got hung up and wasn't working correctly so I replaced it but the pump has been fine for all of 86K miles so far.

Very nice for that to have been a warranty repair.

I think the PS pump dieing is going to be one of those things that eventually will happen to most MINI's.

My PS fan was replaced last year & the new one is starting to make the same growling/grumblie noise. Looks like the dealer will have to warranty it for me.

On my 2004 MCS, the pump and fan were each replaced, at separate times, under warranty fairly early in the car's life; no problems since.

I've found this MINI2 poll to be a fairly revealing testimonial to the issue:

http://www.mini2.com/forum/poll.php?...lts&pollid=836

...and given that people can only vote once in it, it's easy to conclude that over the life of this poll there are folks in the first category that have since migrated into the latter ones...

I have to have the fan replaced today and the dealer tells me that if I wait too much longer the pump is certain to go, too.

Also check threads abiut engine bay fires.

Early MINIs ('02-'04) had 3 different versions of the pump before they got it right in '05; serious PS problems with the pump are very rare in '06 on.

Apparently some '05 cars still had the older pump, so if you are a late '05 build you should be fine.

Tha fan is a bit different. Due to the location it can get filled with debris and may burn out just from a plastic bag or such getting in there.

As was said, do a search there a multitude of posts that will inform you.

Mine is an 05 with 70,ooo experience miles. The build was the 2nd or 3rd week for 05's. So I must have the earlier one.

So is there a difference in design and can I replace it with the new design? If I get a remanufactured one then I guess its the old kind.

How much should I be looking to replace both fan and a pump? Any average prices or estimates at dealers or at indyshops? Thanks.

Mine was replaced after the original failed and caused the steering to lock up
I hit a curb and caused 13k in damage to my mini.

Here is the description:
REMANUFACTURED -- Reservoir not included; A high quality, direct-fit OE replacement power steering pump; Features 100 percent new premium grade seals that ensure no leaking; With A1 Cardone's limited 3-year or 36,000-mile warranty.

I liked the warranty.

Sounds pretty good. Do you know if their warranty covers the cost of installation?

I'm sure it does...but only if you do it yourself at no charge.
