MINI (R53) roof rack trouble - missing screws

Hi - I just got a roof rack for my Cooper S and but it second hand but was never installed. The problem I got is that its missing the screws/bolts to install it to the roof. Anyone know where I could get 6 of these? Thanks!

Also, if you know anyone in Denver CO that could install it, I would appreciate that too. Thank you.

The bolts for the OEM fixed roof rack (the one with the studs inset into the roof) are metric M6 X 25mm (approx. length). The pitch is 1.0. Bolts are available in socket, and various end/screwdriver styles. They cost $0.51 each at my local hardware.

I'm sorry I think there is some misinformation here. I've got the factory roof rack.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-gen-mini.html

Are you talking about these screws? These are special screws that go into the roof and can be purchased from the dealer..they receive the screws from the rack base units..there are two per base. Those are easily lost--I lost some of mine. But the ones that screw into the roof are totally different.

If you're talking about the screws in the pic below, go to the dealer and purchase them..they are unlike any screws you can find at a hardware store.

I have this rack that you cited ( https://www.northamericanmotoring.com...-gen-mini.html )

You can of course, parts from BMW, but if you want to use hardware store parts, the sized I posted will hold into the imbedded mounts.

That's news to me. So you're saying the screws below in that photograph are generic screws that can be bought from a hardware store? I find that hard to believe. These screw into the roof threads (once you drill a hole through the skin), and have their own threads to receive the screws from the bike rack.

The OP wasn't clear about which ones they are looking for.

No they are not generic (if you did believe that I have a bridge to sell you).

If you are stuck and lose a bolt, are cheap, want to rig up a alternative to the factory bolts, or if you would want to use the mounts to hod something else (maybe a flag mount, a tube to hold your fishing rods, etc), the thread type that would screw into the mounts are what I posted.

I wonder where the OP is.

And it's apparent the screws you are talking about are the ones that hold the actual rack legs to the roof (the ones you use the included T handle wrench with) which the OP never clarified what he was looking for.

Is the OP looking for these?? Cause you cannot get these at the hardware store.

The ones that fit in the roof will never be lost once they are installed..and that's what I'm getting at--you cannot buy those at the hardware store.

If the OP bought the rack used...it means he needs to drill the holes in the roof and install the fittings shown here.
Would be great if we were all talking about the same thing.

You are correct. I read this that he lost the bolt/screws from the rack to hold it in the mounts for the roof --"The problem I got is that its missing the screws/bolts to install it to the roof. ".

(I have seen several times where they fell out of the slot and had to be replaced), my response works. You can even buy machine screws in that size that have hex or torx heads instead of the standard slots or bolt heads.

If he meant that the MOUNTS were lost, that is a different thing altogether.

Hi OP here, sorry never came back to say thanks! The metric screws are correct and those are the ones that I had missing and got them at Home Depot. I think if I went to the hardware store asking for the ones that go into the roof they would be looking at me funny... Anyway, since the MINI I bought the rack for is leased, I decided not to go ahead and install it, now I am selling it.

Thanks again guys.

n00b here - I'm just about to pick up an 05 with roof racks. I drive a long distance and have a nasty whistle from them. I will use them as I ski, bike and do lot's of hiking....but would like to be able to pull them off for the majority of the time, if not permanent if it needs to come to that..

The dealer told me there is a way to pull them off (Not a mini dealer), all I see are 2 Allen bolts on each side. What will happen when I pull them off? Will I have bare holes? Do they make covers? Should I leave all as is?

Thanx for the replies, time is of the essence =)

EDIT: Found some info (here) and posted there.....sorry about the extra post

I just replied to you Scan, but for others I'm going to past the message here:

First, the covers come in black, white and chrome. I had a set in the car and when I lost one I looked on the back and ther part # was listed
82 79 0 140 913

I did a google serach of the # and found it but also found out that MINI dealers can also get them, but since it is a part from an older MINI, they just have the # for the newer rack, not this original.

here is where I got it. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...& hg=82&fg=51

BTW, I just did a search here and this thread came up https://www.northamericanmotoring.com...roof-rack.html

When you get them put a little silicone sealer/caulkind on the inside tabs and they won't fall off in a carwash or when you are pulling the twisties...

Best to you, my Friend
