Shift ****

Hi all,
I've recently noticed that the metal on my stock shift **** has worn thin and is starting to peel, which is leaving a sharp edge. I like the idea of replacing it with something fun, but would prefer not to spend an arm and a leg on a shift ****. It seems like anything I like is between 80 and 100 dollars, Which is a little more than I want to spend.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should look? I'm liking the body color ***** or the ones with the union jacks and stuff.
Thanks in advance!

My shift **** is in the same condition (not a quality piece). I've considered the Whalen pool ball ***** (http://www.whalenshiftmachine.com/in...&products_id=9) but also hesitate at the expense. Here's hoping we get some options mentioned (and photos).

I've seen the cheaper pool ***** (mostly on EBay) but read on another thread that the Whalen mount system is worth the cost. I have no idea why that would be however. I don't know about miniconcarne but I'll look into it.

A Union Jack ball shape would be great or a checkered one or a chili red lower part and a white upper part or a ............

I can't help with your search for a reasonably priced replacement, but in the meantime take an emery board (like women use for fingernails) and gently knock down the sharp edge. Mine was so bad it actually cut me - now it's fine.

Maybe this is why the Whalen mount is reportedly worth the cost. Someone here knows the answers to these questions. Mark

I've been searching out someone to make me a hand torched glass **** to match my MINI. I do lampworking myself (torch glass crafting), but I work in a lower heated type glass and I'm looking for the higher heated glass for the durability. Better known as Boro or Pirex. Once I find one I like than I have to work on getting it fitted correctly. Heck, it's my car. I should just Liquid Nail that bad boy on and get it over it. The Hubby gives me the eye when I mention the Liquid Nail thing.

I wondered about the cost before I got my Whalen shift ****. Now I can't believe I waited so long to get it. The quality and workmanship are incredible, and Doug is a great guy to deal with.

It puts a smile on my face every shift..

You guys should ask Robin Casady...he does a lot with this stuff (actually a vendor of wood shift ***** & "metalsmithing"), and if he can't answer your questions, he might be able to point you in the right directions.

Ernesto, how much was your custom ****? I was looking at them, but I get turned off by the whole "call for price" stuff.

Looks nice, but here in AZ and my car being outside in the afternoon heat. I would have that design branded on my palm trying to shift.
Oh and it's missing a gear

I believe the price was $150 if you supply good artwork in a form that Doug can use. I think the call for price was in case he needs time to re-do or convert your artwork.

I don't have enough fingers to figure out how to drive a 6-speed

That would certainly be unique. In a earlier life I had a Porsche 356 that came to me with a shift **** that was fashioned from a antique glass door ****. My wife liked it a lot, it went away none the less. Screw on shift ***** allowed all sorts of creativity.

It clicks and locks on. Will not pull off like the OEM which can be dangerous. Like the one guy said, for an extra $50 bucks you can't go wrong

You should email Whalen. From time to time he has a **** with a blemish that he will let you have for less--and you'll likely never notice the defect. I've got one like that. He sent very good pix of three he had at that time adn I got to choose.

Another choice is to look in the Market section of NAM. If you dont mind the looks of the stock **** you can probably pick up a stock **** on here pretty cheap. If that doesnt work then email Whalen and see if he can ask a few of his customers if they have an extra one they want to part with. There must be someone who has a new or almost new **** they have laying around and dont want.

I like the Whalen ****. They look pretty, sure. But the other benefit to them is their weight. The extra weight at the end of the shifter like that makes the car shift like butter. I hane a short shift kit on mine and it still feels better than stock.

I found a few really nice looking MOMO ***** that are a little more in my price range and won't give me this problem again. Any feedback on any of their stuff?

They look good. Wonder about weight and attaching mechanism? I also note that they don't ask what type of car you have, so must have some sort of universal mounting mechanism. That always makes me wonder. Are all ***** mounted per some industry standard method?

Whalen's ***** fit the MINI solidly with no slop. Also, they are substantial, which makes them feel good. And, you can get a number of stock MINI logos or a personalized design.

Looking forward to hearing from a MOMO owner.

I was hesitant about the cost of the Whalen shiift **** and put it off for about a year. All I can say is that I shouldn't have waited. I would have never believed it until I actually had the **** installed. You can actually feel the difference in shifting because of the weight. And the **** is a work of art. Looks great, and the quality of the connection is perfection. Snaps right on and does not have any movement at all. Doug was great to work with in getting my design done and made sure I ended up with exactly what I was looking for.

I just really am not in a position to spend $100+ for a shift ****. Does anyone have any experience with some that are lower cost?
