Moron hit me while I was stopped at a stoplight. Haven't heard from the adjuster yet. Anyone know from experience whether this will generally total the vehicle or not?

 

Im gonna say not totaled, i wouldnt think there is frame damage, so it would just be body stuff. Dont quote me, its jsut my .02 $

I've been better. I just have some back pain right now, but I hear that sometimes effects can show up unexpectedly later on. Going to the doctor anyway this week.

 

If anything, when you get it rebuilt you'll have some money for some mods or maybe some aero kit pieces

I don't think totalled though. These cars have such a high resale value I'd be hardpressed to find something that did total them that didn't bend the frame.

This one is going to be mainly parts replacement. Complete hatch, LR panel, rear bumper, trim, and lots of assorted fasteners and such.

Had mine undergo something similar a year ago.

I don't know. I put a lot down on this one, so if this one isn't totalled, I won't be able to buy another one in my financial situation.

I just know that if they do try to repair it, it's never going to be as good as new....

 

Bummer! I'm very sorry to learn about your accident. Definitely see the doctor as whiplash trauma to the neck/back can set in hours or even a day or two later. You may be pretty much pain-free now, but that can just be a result of shock. Did you get the name, insurance info etc from the perp? Was an accident report filed with police?

The car most likely can be repaired, your physical/mental damage may be harder to resolve. I'd want to see the other driver pay as much as you/your insurance company can get.

After I was rear-ended I was like a skittish cat at intersections for weeks afterwards...

 

The problem with this kind of mishaps is that there could be hidden damage to the suspension, frame, etc that won't be seen until the teardown is completed.

Being this is a 6 year old car and if the repair dollar amount exceeds 50%-60% of the current market value of the car, you maybe looking at getting it totalled.

The car will never be the same, that I agree 100%. Years ago I went through a similar experience with a fairly new (1 year old) Acura Integra. I absolutely hated the car when I got it back from the body shop. It was never the same. Ended up dumping it at a huge loss.

 

eh a lil duct tape and a couple gallons on Bondo and you'll be good as new

but really, that sucks... almost makes that flashing 3rd light seem worth it

Make sure that you demand diminished value from the other guy's insurance company!

 

Unfortunately, his insurance company is my company. I don't know what that means, but I can't see it being a good thing.

From what I can tell, he must have been doing 25 at least. There was my back glass all the way up his hood to his windshield.

 

Please folks - these cars do not have frames! They are unibody.

 

Not true, the right shop can make this car good as new, if it's not twisted - if it is it's a total then anyway.

Here in KC we have a shop that can literally make the car look like it hasn't been touched since new - most towns have such a shop, you just need to find it. Call all your local high line dealers (MBZ, Jaguar etc) and ask them where they send their cars for body repairs. Insist that yours go there too, and you'll be fine. Only problem is, more expensive repairs means closer to a total. I've heard the magic number is 80% of retail value, not 50 -60% tho......

 

You are looking at about $2700 in parts and another $1000 - $1500 labor.

 

I'm going to disagree. I think the price is going to be about $3500 in parts and about $1500 in labor. Your looking at the rear 2 quarter panels that need to be cut and weld. New hatch and etc. If the price is past a certain percentage of the value of your car, I think there's an option to total it. As for it not being the same again. There's not really much in the rear that can effect performance.

And also, I haven't looked, but either the driver's seat back is now moving back and forth a couple inches, or it's loose on the mount. How would this all factor in?

 

A loose seat back is to be expected after being rear ended. Just move the seat back to a new notch and it should be good as new. Mine is still messed up in the notch it was in when I was rear ended years ago.

 

My car was hit the same way.. pushed it right out into the intersection.. hit by a grand vitara.. anywhooo.. the car looked like yours , except i lost part of the rear trim.. they replaced her good as gold.. new glass in the boot... new hatch.. .about 3500 dollars worth of damage.. also gave me a check for depreciated value.. it didnt hurt the resale value of the car.. that much, any car hit is going to take some hit during resale.. the unibody is quite strong.. have no fear. your mini will be back to you soon!

 

No way for anyone to tell you if it's totaled or not just based on a few photos and without the info on your MINI... mileage, options, etc, etc. But just to play along and venture a guess, I say NOT totaled. Appears to be about $7500 worth of damage to me. Just a wild guess, like I said.

Now... the other driver having the same company doesn't make a bit of difference. If anything, makes it easier for them to come to a quick decision about the liability, not that there's much of a doubt here.

And thank you to the poster who reminded everybody that MINIs do NOT have frames !! Geez, I get tired of saying that. So no, you have no frame damage because there is no frame. But you probably have some damage to the unibody that might require some extensive repairs (things you wouldn't want to watch your beloved MINI go through).

And just another note: It varies from state-to-state but in the majority of states, the magic percentage to determine total loss is 75%. That is, if the repairs exceed 75% of the value of the vehicle, it is handles as a Total Loss.
