Pulley stuck

Hey Guys,

Got the Alta 15% w/ the alta puller. We have the puller installed with everything seemingly ready to go. We put about 3-4 cranks on the puller and it gets insanely tight. About how much pressure are we talking about here? How many pounds should we be exerting to remove the pulley from the shaft?? Ideas?

If you've got the puller on tight, a sacrificial bolt in the SC shaft and it's pulling straight, tighten until the pulley comes off.

If you are using the pulley clamp that requires a bolt grip puller, be sure the tip on the bolt grip puller’s center extractor bolt is smaller than the pulley shaft, or it will prevent the pulley from coming off.

Thanks for the replies, really appreciate it. Finally got the pulley off, just took more brute strength than we thought. We are installing the new pulley now and will need to get the sacrificial bolt out of the SC shaft.

thanks again..

What size was the bolt that you put inside the end of the shaft?

I actually broke a Harbor Freight crow's foot puller, or rather a steering wheel puller trying to get my OEM pulley off. So yeah, they can get tend to want to stay on there. A quick trip to Sears and a craftsman puller was required to finish the job. So it took much more effort than I was expecting as well.

my online rented puller was striped, so i rented one from orileys, the tip was too big for the shaft but with a little bit of muscle, and paying for the orileys tool afterwards, the pulley came off.
Ohh i also didnt torq down the bolts correctly so now im waiting delivery of a new base because apparently 30NM is too much torq, especially when it calls for 9.8 final. opps

Another Epic Fail for the "tighten it until it breaks, then back off 1/8th turn" school of thought.

Hope it all goes back together well for you.

Thanks....I am really enjoying the powergain. The work was tough and Alta has it right rated at a 4 difficulty, but their tool did the job along with some of my own tools and thought. Taking the tension off the belt and the pulley off the shaft were the hardest parts. The rest is intimidating sounding, but not that bad. Admittedly tho, I was scared $hitless when the engine was 8" in the air. She buttoned back up perfectly and off went went with a gang more power. Awesome.
