That's the cruise control. Green light (it's supposed to be a speedo) means it's 'on', but not necessarily activated. 'Set' will set the speed. Best to consult your owner's manual for complete info.

In order to activate cruise control, the cruise control light (the green light you're referring to) needs to be on and you have to press the "+" to set it, otherwise the light just notifies you that the cruise speed can be set.

Another example of why reading your owners manual should be mandatory.

Yep. That's why I say it's on, but not necessarily activated. IMO, they should have a two colored LED - yellow when 'on', but not activated and green when on and activated. It's minimally annoying, but would be simple enough to do, and since it has two states, it should identify them.

The cruise will be automatically deactivated if you hit the brake or the clutch, or the 'on' button once, but the light will stay green.
After setting your speed with '+', the + and - buttons will change the set speed by ~1mph per press.
If you've hit the brakes for traffic, pressing the 'res' (resume) button will reactivate the cruise and return you to the speed that was set before you hit the brakes.
If you hold the '-' (often referred to as 'coast' in other cars), the car will slow until you release the button.

Your Motoring Advisor should have told you what all that means, unless you bought it used.

If he's talking about a Gen 1 (late '04+ don't have the 'set' buttons), then he definitely got it used.

Its really not their job.

You (the end user) are supposed to read the operators manual before driving the car.

In case you didn't get one, here's the `03 Owner's Manual: http://www.motoringfile.com/files/20...perCooperS.pdf

The `04 manual gives an error 404 - missing.

Having come from a car that had two indicators for the cruise control state, "CRUISE" and "SET", the lack of such a thing on the MINI (the BMWs are guilty of this too, if I'm not mistaken) confounds me sometimes. Usually when I go to cancel cruise control, thinking cruise control is engaged, and I end up switching it off.

The Audi cruise control works as it should: you can set it to be always on, using a different switch than the Set button, and a light indicates when it is engaged, instead of just turned on.

Why MINI did such a seriously lousy job on the high-cost-optional CC is hard to image - it's like they had only heard about cruise control, but never actually had to use it - sort of like a 70's Toyota.

Why is this such a big deal? lol

Its kinda laughable. I have no problems with only having one light.

I guess there isn't enough to argue about today.

I doubt it is such a big deal--it only seems like it is because we're talking about it on the Internet, which is serious business...

Exactly. Like NSRWC says, it's not a life and death matter, but it is annoying given that the fix is so simple. Heck, they have a two color LED on the gas indicator (on the Nav, the last LED turns from orange to red when only the last LED is lit), seems they could have done the same for cruise.

Correct except that each press of the + or - will change your speed by two kph (1.24 mph)

Funny story: Was at an autocross and a Mini friend did a nice clean fast run. When he came back he was all excited about his time, but then REALLY worried: During his run a mystery green indicator light had come on with a clock on it.

We told him it was his "low time of the day" light.

He must've spanked the CC button while turning. It was funny...

LoL, I did the same thing a month ago, accidentally hit the on button. Looked down and saw the green light, had know idea what it was, had never used the cruise control for 2 years. Called my mechanic, he laughed , said he gets this call regularly. I did actually use it this past week, as I took a trip and used the freeway, works pretty good . Also BTW, got 34+ mpg. on the freeway , well according to the OBC.
