Gas gauge not working after filling it to the top...

As the title says:
Last night I filled the tank (premium 93) all the way to the filler neck. The gauge was working great last night. This morning it only moves a litltle bit(about 1cm) and stops there, and of course I get the red low fuel mark on. Did I break it by accidentally overfilling? Should I wait until I drive for a couple of days and the extra gas burns out? I'm bummed, as I don't like non-working features in my car.

Thanks

How's this coming along? I figured the next time you tried to start the car it might have reset. If not, it's more than likely a float sensor in the tank that is either stuck or broke. If the car is still under warranty, take it back. If not, get ready for a messy job. Keep us posted.

Re-check the gas cap, if it isn't closed properly, the gauge won't read.

I had this same exact problem and my Mini dealership fixed the "sensor" in the gas tank under warranty. I don't know if it was a floating sensor or an electronic sensor, but they fixed it overnight. More on the problem: The gauge would show empty with the red light the first time I started the car after a fill-up, but it would start working again and display the correct gas level without a red light after I drove the car a few times.

Chances are it will reset after you drive the car and turn it off and back on a time or two. Many of us have had this happen on occasion.

Yeah. What gaffer said. It's not an uncommon problem. Had mine come and go over the years. Always clears up after one or two starts.

This is exactly what happened to me yesterday. I ran some errands later in the afternoon, and by the time I was taking off from the last place I had to go before hitting home, everything went back to normal, weird though.....

The interesting thing is that I'm a little over the 50k mile mark, so I guess that might be it for the factory warranty, (I got a Maxcare aftermarket extended one though ). On the other hand I got the clutch/flywheel replaced while in warranty, since I had the morning "chewbacca" sound, plus the "helicopter" sound while idling at street lights.

Weird.... I replied to this issue yesterday. This morning I start my MINI to go to work and guess what? My gas gauge shows empty, light is on. I drive down the street, stop, turn off the ignition, start it back up and it resets. Hasn't happened in quite sometime 'till this morning. Karma or Ghost of Lucas?

Never, never, never fill the tank that high. Stop filling when the nozzle shuts off. You will damage the re-circ carbon filter.

This happened to me yesterday, the morning after filling up. I thought someone might have siphoned the gas out of my tank! I turned off the car, then back on and the problem was gone... Weird.

Does anyone know if the sensor is dry or floating?

The sensor is electric, and there are 2 sensors.

My gas gauge is not working since i bought the car...i don't know what the problem is, but the dealerships says is the gas gauge it self and not the sensor. Don't know what to think... :( :( :(

My gas gauge stopped working tonite. It was OK to the first and second places we stopped at, then nothing. Seems to be no big deal. If it keeps up I might get to use the extended warranty.

mine has been doing this off and on for the past six months. I've found the only thing that fixes it for me is to turn the car off, remove the gas cap, clean it, make sure the tube isn't bent or pinched, then re-seat the gas cap and that usually works. I suspect in my case the cap isn't sealing and thus not creating the proper vaccumn for the guage to work

Our 2008 MC has been doing this a bit lately; Next oil change is coming up soon so I'll probably wait for that.
