Just rented a Cooper this weekend for a trip with the local club. Twas a blast, as expected. However, twice today my son burned his leg on the exhaust tip. Six year olds are known for high levels of energy and enthusiasm and so they don't pay attention like they should all the time. But it did happen twice and burns are no fun, especially when treatment is not immediately available.

After we got home after the second burn, I examined the situation. The exhaust tip sticks out about an inch or so past the valence, so it is not shielded by bodywork. The S is not like this, I don't believe.

At the destination of the rally, I talked to at least one other person who suffered the same fate.

Has this happened to anyone else? Are people not talking about it?

If nothing else people need to be extra careful around the back of the Cooper. It would also be very easy for MINI to shorten the exhaust a teeny bit to ensure this is not likely to happen again.

I've got the Borla on my Cooper, but it has the same problem. The tip looks fabulous, but it sure gets hot. I drove my car down to Brooklyn from Boston a few weekends ago, and when my friend got out of the car to stash her bag in the boot, she burned her calf pretty badly on the exhaust tip. I saw her again last weekend, and she's got quite a scar from it. I guess I'll be extra-vigilant about warning people from now on!

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I've been away for a few weeks, and I think this is important for people to keep in mind.

Watch the little ones around the wheels too! Today's popular alloy wheels have nice big openings that allow little hands to reach through and touch hot brake rotors.

I like the warnings on the coffe cups from McDonalds...CAUTION: Contents are extremley HOT. Next the MINI will have warnings, exhaust tips are hot. Hope your kid is OK.

And, may I add:

Don't try to lick the exhaust tips !!!!!!!!

It's not that you will get stuck, but worse..

sorry, I would like to apologize for that.
I'm sorry your kid got burnt, I hope your kid's ok!
However, there are soo many place where one can get hurt, not just the exhausts, but the doors, the windows, the boot lid. I think it is important to teach kids to chill out around cars.

Thanks, Nobull60 he's fine now, burns are almost healed.

My fear now is that he does not acquire a lifelong aversion to MINIs!

This isn't just isolated to Mini's. My '00 Mustang GT will get you too. As well as my 87 RX-7 Turbo. It has a custom exhaust ant it is HOT I burned my let on my RX-7 once. It gets to be over 700° though. I would have prefered to brush against the mustang.

I burned my leg when I was little too on my dads Harley. Dont worry kids get over that stuff pretty quick.

I put the magnaflow exhaust on my mini and the tip only sticks out about 1/4 an inch so I don't really have to worry about it burning anyone.
