Scan tool

Hi guys, where can I get a scan tool for 2006 MCSa to read engine fault codes? I've seen few ads offering it for $130-150 US, any place I can find it cheaper? Thanks (I'm in Canada).

Kragen/Schucks has the Innova 3100a for $100 US right now. That used to be a lot in Canadian $, but no more.

If you're interested in gauges as well, the ScangaugeII reads and clears codes, but it doesn't give as much detail on the codes. It does offer up to four electronic gauges which can be fun/useful. It's ~$150.

Thanks guys. I'm primarily interested in the ones that give details on the codes, as opposed to just being able to clear them.
Any of the above mentioned - will they all read MINI's codes? Also, would I have any issues using US scan tool on Canadian car model? I know, I know, newbie questions...thanks

AgentCoop, have you found a scan tool? I also live in Canada and have been searching around for a scan tool. I've been considering the R5/EMX for Mini or the Scangauge II. I also would like a tool that provided detailed info on the codes, but I also like the idea of having some onboard displays (MPG, etc.).

I ended up getting both - Scangauge for realtime info, Innova 3100a for detailed CEL info.
The Scangauge will give you the CEL code, but then you have to go look it up to see what the code means. The Innova will tell you the code, as well as what the code means and a host of other parameters (engine load, RPM, IAT, etc.)

Have you found both the Innova and the Scangauge to be in agreement with each other? I mean in terms of detecting error codes. I wonder if one could simply purchase the Scangauge and try to find a book / reference manual for the codes? I'd rather stick to one unit at this point.

You could use just the Scanguage and plug the codes into Google. The codes are universal. I have an older scanner that had a book that came with it and listed all the codes. I just keep that in the toolbox. I use the Scanguage in the Mini. Haven't needed it for codes yet. Winter is coming and my Ram always throws a couple codes when it gets below 0 outside.

I have only one reference point, but yes, it deciphered the same code as the Innova. Some codes are universal, others are manufacturer dependent, but they're all 'googleable'.
Comes back to what you're looking for and what you're willing to spend. If you just want to read/clear codes, you can probably find an even cheaper code reader.
The Scangauge is nice because it gives other info, but it's also $50/50% more than even an advanced code reader.

For an even cheaper option, find a local car club - someone's bound to have one you can use to read any codes that come up...

Thanks! I've read numerous reviews on the Scangauge II and finally decided to pick one up on eBay. I wanted a reliable code reader but I also liked the other option (multiple gauge display, MPG, etc.). The price was $169 with Free Xpresspost shipping, so for Canada this is not all that bad. If the unit can help save a few dollars at the pumps it's worth a few extra dollars to me. Plus, don't we all love gadgets!!

Thanks for all your help!
